Showroom Spotlight
Clarence House has partnered with custom furniture maker Chaddock for a revamp of the textile brand’s showroom in New York’s Decoration & Design Building, a collaboration born out of serendipity.
It all started when Houston-based designer Benjamin Johnston, who has collections with both Chaddock and S. Harris (which has the same parent company, Fabricut, as Clarence House), was traveling to New York. Chaddock CEO Andrew Crone had told him his company was looking for showroom representation in the city, and upon arriving in the Big Apple, Johnston learned that Clarence House was looking to partner with a furniture company.
“One of the things we wanted to do was to really show designers how amazing our fabrics look on furniture, and that really was what sparked this collaboration,” says David Klaristenfeld, vice president of Fabricut. “It’s exciting for us to finally be able to showcase those fabrics.”
The enthusiasm for the partnership goes both ways. “New York has always been a tough market for us, not having our own showroom there, so we have been looking for the right partner to collaborate with to bring the Chaddock Workroom to life in the city,” says Crone. “We’re very like-minded brands, both family-owned companies, and so there’s a lot of synergies there.”
Their merchandising teams came together to update the 9,500-square-foot showroom, where guests are now greeted by two Franco swivel chairs (from Johnston’s collection with Chaddock) seated under a Clarence House sign and clad in a modern, geometric pattern. In the center of the space, the lines become more transitional, with boldly patterned wallpaper creating a colorful backdrop for Chaddock’s hand-finished, made-to-order furniture upholstered in the brand’s classic prints. “I think a lot of trade showrooms try to play it safe and display their furniture in neutrals,” says Crone. “With Clarence House, we were able to put some of the most amazing textiles on our furniture, so it makes our presentation unique and exciting.” In other areas of the showroom, vignettes lean more traditional, with Chaddock collections from Mark D. Sikes and Mary McDonald. The space is a time machine where you’ll find decades-old products next to brand-new options.
Both brands hope that designers get a multifaceted experience when visiting. “We want to reintroduce Clarence House as a showroom where you can come and not just shop for fabrics, but shop for furniture as well,” says Klaristenfeld. For Chaddock, having the newfound exposure and the opportunity to introduce its bespoke, customizable pieces to a wider audience has been invaluable. As for their matchmaker: “There’s very few North Carolina brands that are actually made in North Carolina that are represented in New York,” says Johnston. “I think it’s wonderful to be able to bring that to New York in this particularly meaningful way, and bring together two companies that I love very much, and see the magic that happens as a result.” D&D Building, 979 Third Ave., Suite 205, New York
