Business News
Bed Bath & Beyond has acquired real estate platform Fathom Holdings—which offers brokerage, mortgage, title and insurance services—in a $53 million all-stock deal, Retail Dive reports. According to CEO Marcus Lemonis, the purchase aligns with Bed Bath & Beyond’s “Everything Home” strategy, in which the company aims to capture consumers at every stage of the home buying process, from shopping and financing to furnishing and design. The deal is the latest in a recent string of acquisitions by Bed Bath & Beyond, which purchased Michigan-based Installed Right and SFV Services just last week, along with The Container Store and F9 Brands (the owner of Cabinets To Go and Lumber Liquidators) in April and Kirkland’s in 2025.

Willard Gary Black Sr., 85, the founder and co-owner of North Carolina upholstery manufacturer Old Hickory Tannery, is facing charges of second-degree murder in the death of his business partner, Charlotte Observer reports. The incident occurred last week at the manufacturing site, where Black was arrested at the scene following the shooting of Robert Arguelles, 59, who held a 49.9 percent stake in the company. In the months leading up to the altercation, the two had become embroiled in a legal dispute over Old Hickory Tannery, Furniture Today reports. The conflict culminated in a court order on the same day of the alleged crime, in which Black was ordered to transfer his share of the company to Arguelles and resign from his role. Now, Black is being held on a $2.5 million bond, with the case scheduled to return to court in July.

Luxury outdoor furnishings brand Skyline Design has been acquired by Spain-based home brand conglomerate Voolcan Grupo, Casual News Now reports. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The purchase marks a return for Skyline, which originated under Voolcan more than two decades ago before it was sold to the Calzadilla family—the owners of Miami-based furniture manufacturers Pelican Reef Group and Panama Jack. Following the deal, Skyline will fully take over the AmericasMart showroom it formerly shared with Pelican and Panama Jack, as the latter two relocate to Casual Market Atlanta.

Textile makers and importers in California are facing a looming deadline under the state’s new recycling law, Home Textiles Today reports. Under the Textile Recovery Act, passed in 2024, textile businesses must register with Landbell USA—a state-approved producer responsibility organization—by July 1, or face fines of up to $50,000 per day. Following the registration process, Landbell will begin evaluating California’s textile recycling infrastructure in order to make recommendations about building a new circular network, with a report due by March 1, 2027.

A federal probe into the 2021 collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo building in Surfside, Florida, that killed 98 people has revealed that the incident was triggered by a structural failure that took place three weeks earlier, The Wall Street Journal reports. “Following an extensive technical investigation, the team has concluded that the collapse began in early June 2021, when two connections between garage columns and the pool deck failed,” the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s National Construction Safety Team said in a statement. The issue created a domino effect as the deck’s concrete slab gradually began to warp and fracture, before giving way entirely and pulling down a portion of the building on the day of the tragedy. Federal investigators attributed the building’s structural issues to flaws in its original design, coupled with long-term degradation and heavy additions made to the pool deck.
