Showroom Spotlight
The new Yung Atelier Chicago flagship is a tribute to its diverse team of artisans. The 33 makers are the foundation of the drapery and window treatment company founded in 1994 by Ching Yung. (He retired in 2019 but rejoined as a part-time consultant last year.) The team members—95 percent of whom are people of color, and who hail from around the world—range from master seamstresses to entry-level upholsterers from Yung Atelier’s apprenticeship program. “[The new showroom] symbolizes our dedication to nurturing creativity, honoring our heritage, and providing meaningful opportunities for a diverse group of people who are often overlooked—not just in our industry but in the world at large,” says company president and creative director Bobby Yung, who joined his father’s company in 2012.
The new showroom is housed in the same Chicago building as the company’s workroom, satisfying Ching Yung’s dream of having everything under one roof: design, production and presentation. The convenient spot also allows the brand to invite clients and partners into the process, showing where the pieces are crafted before being put on display. “To have our gallery housed in the same building and to create a direct connection to that process—we’re really proud to present [that],” Bobby Yung tells Business of Home.
The showroom’s design features wabi-sabi, art nouveau and Scandinavian influences. Created in partnership with Chicago design firm Kate Boyce Studio, a longtime Yung Atelier collaborator, the space intentionally encourages visitors to pause and reflect. “I wanted guests to feel a sense of discovery, whether they’re visiting to review details for an existing project—samples, strike-offs, mock-ups—[or to see] our furniture collection for the very first time, or even to admire the art in antique pieces that complement the environment itself,” says Yung.
Immersive vignettes throughout the space were designed to spotlight the workroom’s range of capabilities. Within the open layout, guests will find a great room with both formal and informal seating options, a dining room, a breakfast room, a bedroom, and a foyer. The brand recently launched its inaugural furniture collection, and the pieces on display showcase the many possibilities for customization. For example, one sofa has three different seat cushions and three different back pillows, exhibiting the range of possible combinations in a piece.
In addition to custom furniture, the space displays window treatments, Roman shades, draped cabinetry, upholstered doors and bedding: “It’s truly our entire wheelhouse of product that’s showcased in the space,” says Yung. One of his favorite features is the partnership with Francine Almeida, the founder of Tala, a local art gallery that will display rotating exhibitions, allowing the atelier to highlight local artists and engage with the community.
The showroom opening marks Yung Atelier’s 30th year, and the brand has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. “The true art of upholstery, hand-tied springs and meticulous detailing is a dying trade—and so, to double down on slow manufacturing, we’re proud to present that ideology and that approach,” says Yung. “The space reflects our commitment to innovation, design excellence and the preservation of craftsmanship.” 3229 S.
