Showroom Spotlight
Holland & Sherry has arrived in South Carolina. The London-based fabric, wallcovering and rug company became one of the first brands (joining the likes of Fritz Porter, Kravet and more) to launch a showroom in the new Charleston Design District at the Navy Yard—a historic 1901 location that has recently been developed by Jamestown, the company behind the Boston Design Center and New York’s Industry City.
“The Charleston design scene [has] been so good to us over the years,” Daniel Waldron, the company’s vice president of interiors, tells Business of Home. “It felt not like an opportunity for us to try and grow our business, but more of an appreciation to [the designers]. [Now,] they don’t have to fly to Atlanta or New York, and we can have something locally for them.” Though smaller than some of Holland & Sherry’s 18 worldwide locations (13 of which are in the States), the 1,400-square-foot site won’t skimp on offerings. “When this opportunity came, it was so interesting for us because we have hundreds of active accounts in Charleston. [We wanted] to do something that’s kind of a satellite but allows [designers] to shop the full breadth of our collection, and also repped lines like Galbraith & Paul and Zak+Fox.”
After passing through a seating area off the main entrance, guests are greeted by the Holland & Sherry core collection—about 1,500 SKUs of wool, linen, performance textiles and embroideries. The showroom features a designated rug room, as well as three bays of fabrics showcasing all of the brand’s collaborations with designers like Katie Leede and Katie Ridder—all housed beneath soaring 18-foot ceilings. Perhaps the most impressive area, a large vault with lead doors originally used by Navy officers, has been transformed into a sample room.
The brand is looking forward to tapping into a new region. “We think of ourselves as not sales people, but collaborators, so being a part of the Charleston design scene is just the coolest,” says Waldron. “Being a part of these projects and being able to do custom work—there’s just so much building going on here. That’s what really makes our salespeople feel important about what they do.”
The company is already planning its next outpost, in Scottsdale, Arizona, proof that the showroom model is far from dead. “A lot of people think the showroom model is not as important anymore,” says Waldron. “Of course, outside sales are part of it, but having a place where people can come in and take a look at what we’re doing and size up the Holland & Sherry brand is really important to us.” 2158 Noisette Blvd., Suite 204, North Charleston, South Carolina
