Some designers see developing sales skills as a necessary evil. Others, like Jamie Gasparovic, see it as a huge opportunity—one worth cultivating. “Sales skills are so critical no matter what you do, especially as an entrepreneur,” she says. “I think interior designers often shy away from the fact that they’re selling because it has a stigma of some sort, but you are 100 percent selling all the time: selling to get the job in the first place, selling the value of interior design as a whole, selling why they need this sofa rather than that one.”
