This designer’s one regret in hiring an accountant? That she didn’t do it sooner

After hiring an accountant to help her manage her firm’s finances, Theresa Butler felt the burden of managing the firm’s finances lifted, and embraced a fresh perspective on product purchases and cash flow.

There’s bootstrapping, and then there’s operating on such a tight shoestring that it’s liable to snap at any moment. Theresa Butler found herself in the latter position three and half years after launching her Atlanta firm. “I was doing our books myself, and it was a hot mess,” she says. “I had nothing in the computer, no system—just a grocery store bag where I would dump receipts and ignore them because I dreaded doing it. The breaking point was realizing I could not take on the creative side and all of the administrative work. It was just too much.”
