This designer gave away a free room makeover. It transformed her business

Inspired by her late husband, Atlanta designer Theresa Butler decided to donate a bedroom makeover on Instagram. The response was enormous, tripling her social media followers, boosting engagement and introducing a slew of new brand partnerships. She explains how she gifted her services—and shares her plans for the next giveaway.

My sweet husband, who passed away back in 2023 from a very rare cancer, was a huge volunteer. He went to schools on his lunch breaks to read to kids; he worked with the local Boys & Girls Clubs; he volunteered at his job. He just did so many things to help others. I didn’t realize how inspired I was until after he passed away. That’s when I began trying to figure out a way that I could give back to honor him.

I thought: What if I gifted an entire room to someone who could never get around to making their own space what they wanted, or who couldn’t afford to? I felt like to truly give something away, I wanted it to feel complete—I didn’t want to give away just one thing. If I said, “We’re going to do a giveaway for bedroom drapery” to someone who has no idea what to do with a space, we’re really not helping them, right? To feel like I’m actually doing something good for someone, I decided that it needed to be a complete package.
