For a century, the New York Design Center has been keeping it 100. From its beginnings as the New York Furniture Exchange to its modern-day status as the home of (about) 100 showrooms showcasing furnishings, fabric, lighting, accessories and antiques, the Lexington Avenue landmark has continuously offered the design industry the ultimate in up-to-the-minute collections and connections. Nothing captures the breadth of both the products and personalities that animate the 16-story building better than its signature annual event, What’s New, What’s Next, taking place on Thursday, September 17. The continuation of 200 Lex’s centennial festivities, it promises an action-packed agenda of launches, workshops and panels to cement its position as design central for the greater New York area and beyond.

“We’ve been dedicated to the design community for 100 years, and What’s New, What’s Next epitomizes our mission,” says Alix Lerman, chief marketing officer at 200 Lex. “The focus on product debuts reflects the roots of our building.” Introductions on the itinerary include Claudia Afshar for Baker, Ken Fulk for Sutherland x Perennials, Annabelle Selldorf for Munder Skiles, and Thomas Lavin for Thibaut, in addition to collections by Rosemary Hallgarten, Jiun Ho and Maya Romanoff.

The open houses and showroom programming also serve to open minds, hosting discussions about such of-the-moment subjects as wellness in interiors, AI in workflow, traditionalism, minimalism and sustainability. “The idea is to be a fly on the wall for these intimate insider chats,” says Lerman. In a panel with John and Anne Pomp, Monica Santayana and Ronald Alvarez—the husband-and-wife co-founders of Moniomi—consider the pros and cons of mixing your professional and personal lives. A cohort of chic creatives at JD Staron explores the eternal symbiosis between fabrics and fashion, while a lineup of A-listers at Fromental/Collier Webb makes the case for slow-burn collaborations between British and American brands. (“200 Lex has a nice concentration of British showrooms,” notes Lerman.) Even the bespoke dog bed has its day at Interlude Home, where designers debate the place of pets in contemporary interiors. “We love to do panels that are out of the box, with a mix of buzzy big names and fresh voices who have something exciting to say,” Lerman adds. Fashion designer and man-about-town Isaac Mizrahi checks both boxes: Nodding to the centennial, he’ll speak with New York design editor Wendy Goodman about what makes the city the design capital of the world.
