Photographing this serene Paris flat hinged on precise timing and restrained styling

For a client’s Paris pied-à-terre, London designer Tala Fustok partnered with local stylist Sarah de Beaumont and photographer Ambroise Tézenas to balance contemporary furnishings with a historic sense of place.

When we first saw this apartment, it was all in pastel colors. There were a lot of moldings, but they had been added more recently. The clients loved the bones of the space—beautiful rooms with elements of French classicism—and they wanted it to be contemporary but have that Haussmannian feeling. We tried to retain the old when possible but make it of today: [keeping] classic features like the fireplace, but updating details like timber paneling that was slightly more old-fashioned. We kept the moldings in the master bedroom because they were original to the flat and painted the walls this fresh pale powder blue, which reminds you that you’re in Paris when you wake up.
