How this Bay Area designer gets clients excited about custom millwork

Clara Jung explains why no project is complete without some custom millwork—and how she creates winning storage solutions that help clients understand the value.

For Clara Jung, custom millwork ticks three boxes. It makes a design statement, while also doing the hard work of hiding eyesores like radiators, A/V equipment and clutter. The underappreciated factor? Built-to-order solutions make financial sense too. “What speaks to a lot of clients is a value proposition,” explains the Berkeley, California–based designer and founder of Banner Day Interiors. “These are beautiful pieces that are made, but they’re also long-term solutions instead of buying a bookcase and throwing it out every five-to-10-year cycle.”
