Showroom spotlight:
There’s no place like home, and Wentworth, a new shop in the historic Harleston Village neighborhood of Charleston named for the street it’s located on, takes that iconic line to heart. Founded by award-winning event planner Gregory Blake Sams, the 2,600-square-foot space offers a curated selection of home goods—everything from table linens, candles and homewares to china, cutlery and garden supplies, along with antiques, textiles and custom pillows—all set in a welcoming mid-1800s storefront.
The building itself took about a year and half to renovate and restore. It was originally a mixed-use building with a grocery store and apartments; when Sams took over, it had most recently been a flower shop. He took the space down to the studs, restoring the original facade and filling the interior with thoughtful touches like lighting from Charleston-based brand Urban Electric Co. At the heart of the space is Wentworth’s show kitchen, designed around a fireplace dating back to the building’s original period. “The goal is to make it feel like an extension of the home,” says Sams. “I’ve been really mindful in making sure that anything that’s in the shop, I would feel comfortable putting in my home—most of it I have in my home already.”
Some of those products include hand-painted pillow designs from London-based artist and former Gucci creative director Gergei Erdei (whose items almost instantly sold out); Limoges porcelain from Parisian ceramicist Alix D. Reynis; hand-painted lampshades from British artist Alvaro Picardo; custom hand-blown glass bowls created in collaboration with glass artist Andrew Iannazzi of Vitricca Iannazzi; and homewares from the London-based artist Giuseppe Parrinello, known for his Greco-Roman influence. Visitors can also partake in a design studio experience in collaboration with French porcelain brand Marie Daâge to create custom china patterns.
“For me, [the showroom is] an extension of the things that I believe in—that all things can be beautiful and useful,” says Sams. “We try to really have a strong intent to find things that are of quality, that are beautiful, that are useful. Even though it’s utilitarian, it can still be really beautiful and well-made.” 162 Wentworth St., Charleston
