In the BOH series What I Love, we’re asking designers to build us a mood board of what’s inspiring them right now.

Laura Tribbett, founder and principal designer at Chicago-based Outline Interiors, does much of her creative work in the city. But when she needs an escape from the hustle and bustle, she seeks comfort in the country. Beginning with the basic components of a current lakeside project in Wisconsin, her fantasy mood board embraces a personal and sophisticated direction, making the palette that much richer, the patterns even more playful, the finishes irresistible to the touch. “Mixing classic elements like linen, wool and leather—but in updated textures and colors—moves the scheme into a modern and updated take on a country home,” she says.
Tribbett’s choices are not merely aesthetic: Items like a chunky sisal flatweave rug and a sepia-hued grasscloth mural capture the organic appeal of a rural retreat. “Leaning into materials found in nature, I’ve assembled mostly sustainable fibers, but reimagined in vibrant patterns to create a warm and inviting environment,” she says. Hints of whimsy keep the mood fun, from patent leather trim in a surprising coffee shade to a linen plaid that mimics an autumnal rainbow and a chocolate-dipped cotton fabric bursting with bunny rabbits.
“I wanted this collection to tell a story of a space that’s approachable and exciting,” the designer continues. “A place where you would be just as happy entertaining a large group of guests as reading a book in peaceful solitude.” Here, she describes the florals, crosses, stripes and polka dots of her nubby, nuanced selection.

1. HYDEN SISAL CARPET in 116 BY LEE JOFA AT KRAVET
“A sisal flatweave is such a versatile layer: It can work in modern or traditional spaces. And for a country home, it’s the perfect texture to create a sense of casual elegance.”
2. RANGE WALL MURAL IN SEPIA BY PHILLIP JEFFRIES
“Phillip Jeffries always does grasscloth right. When I saw this colorful, layered mural, I knew it needed to make it into a project! The warm colors together are so pretty and peaceful—a calming backdrop to a cozy room.”
3. RAGAMUFFIN FABRIC BY DE LE CUONA
“Maybe it’s the ribbonlike format of this sample, but I have had a crush on this colorful dLC plaid for years! It’s the ultimate casual ‘bridge’ that can be used in small doses to connect various pieces while playing an impactful, pivotal role.”
4. SEAFOAM FABRIC IN PINK BY JENNIFER SHORTO
“Every scheme needs a small-scale woven! The rust-pink colorway and the cream polka dots make this a versatile fabric that can have a myriad of applications.”
5. PATENT LEATHER CORD TRIM IN ESPRESSO BY HOLLY HUNT
“You might not think of patent leather when speccing a casual country home, but why the heck not? The sheen on this cord creates a nice pop in a space that could otherwise have a tendency to be all matte.”
6. DEVI FABRIC BY GASTON Y DANIELA FOR KRAVET
“A relaxed linen stripe is what country homes are made of. Gaston y Daniela brings it in this category: The fabric would make a great slipcovered sofa or headboard.”
7. TERRAZZO FABRIC IN JAWBREAKER BY RULE OF THREE
“I love anything marbled and colorful to break things up, and this printed linen fabric does just that. It’s playful and sophisticated all at once.”
8. LAUREL FABRIC IN WIND BY MILTON TEXTILES
“This citron woven fabric pairs a juicy pop of color with a subtle pattern that can read as a stripe or a plaid. It would be great upholstery for a swivel chair or bed frame.”
9. iSeo IN IVORY BY LANCE WOVEN LEATHER
“Leather plus country homes makes perfect sense, and when you add the dimensionality and texture of woven leather, anything it touches is elevated instantly. I could picture a pair of ottomans wrapped in this gorgeous material.”
10. COTTONTAILS FABRIC IN CHESTNUT BY SCHUMACHER
“This pattern and colorway provide just the right amount of whimsy and sophistication for a family home. Trimmed with a fun piping, it’s even more playful.”
11. MDS STRIPE PIPING IN SAPPHIRE BY SAMUEL & SONS
“Blue-and-white stripes are a classic coastal element. Using them in small doses to trim out the charming bunny pattern adds even more fun to the scheme.”
12. CROSS WINDOWCOVERING IN CHARCOAL BY MAX HUMPHREY FOR HARTMANN&FORBES
“I love a textured woven shade, always! Reimagined in this charcoal colorway and subtle Swiss cross pattern modernizes a classic.”
13. RICE TILE IN BIANCO DECO LEAF BY MARAZZI
“This blue-and-white floral print tile is so sweet. It would make a beautiful shower wall installation or even a kitchen backsplash.”
14. CRISTALLO GLACE QUARTZITE BY TERRAZZO & MARBLE SUPPLY COMPANIES
“My love for quartzite is strong! You get the beauty and variation that comes with natural stone, but with extra durability. I would use this with rustic wooden cabinetry to create a super tonal and cozy kitchen.”
15. COPPER PLUMBING FIXTURE BY WATERWORKS
“A country home is the perfect place to experiment with plumbing finishes. Why not lean into an industrial aesthetic and use a natural copper?”
16. TRANSLUCENT GLASS IN DOE BY KOHLER
“I love using a textured glass sink in a powder room. It’s a nice little surprise and creates an elevated experience for guests.”
17. NUBRA RUG IN SLATE BY MARC PHILLIPS
“This merino wool area rug is so cozy underfoot and features the richest blue to build your palette from. It would be luxurious in a living room or bedroom suite.”
18. STONE WASH COLORS LINEN FABRIC IN PUYA BY ROGERS & GOFFIGON
“I used this linen as the backdrop for my flat lay, but for window treatments, pillows and upholstery, it works as a go-to neutral.”
