NYSID students were asked to redesign the school’s student lounges in a competition judged by industry pros. Jessica Romm, editorial director of Domino, judged the student projects, along with designers Kati Curtis, Charles Farruggio and Alejandra Munizaga.
Recognizing the school’s 100th anniversary, NYSID asked students to redesign two spaces: the 70th Street Lounge, and the lounge at the Graduate Center. The contest “aimed to engage the students to create spaces that foster and enhance their own learning and college experiences and those of the students who follow them.” More than 50 students, in 15 teams, responded to the challenge, and were mentored by NYSID faculty.
BFA students Yingyi Chen, Vivian Rosenberg, and Rikki Tenenbaum, who were mentored by NYSID instructor and alumnus Don Kossar, won the 70th Street challenge for their multifunctional and collaborative space. The winners of the Graduate Center competition are MFA-1 students Tom Elka, Larissa Moutrier, Christelle Muhimpundu, and Stephanie Rizzardi, mentored by NYSID instructor and alumna Lissette Carrera, for “Cocoon,” a design focused on relaxation and interaction.
The designs will be developed over the summer; the school is also identifying sponsors to contribute goods, services and financial support so that the students’ designs can be fully realized.
