Helena Christensen needs no introduction. As a supermodel—one of the “Magnificent Seven”—she has starred in pioneering fashion campaigns for Chanel, Versace, Prada, Valentino and Karl Lagerfeld and appeared on countless magazine covers for the likes of Vogue, W and Harper’s Bazaar.
To say Christensen has a keen aesthetic sense is an understatement. In addition to her illustrious modeling career, the Copenhagen-born style icon and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador is an accomplished photographer, hosting exhibitions at galleries across the globe, and is the co-founder and original creative director of Nylon magazine. In the early aughts, she co-launched the lifestyle store Butik in New York—alongside floral artist Leif Sigersen and Camilla Staerk, her co–creative director at creative studio Staerk & Christensen—and more recently, collaborated with New York–based studio Bower on a bespoke line of homewares.
No surprise then that for her latest creative endeavor, Christensen is turning her attention to interiors. As the inaugural global artistic director for BoConcept, she’ll use her seasoned eye to oversee the Danish design brand’s photo shoots, develop fabrics and work with designers on future collections.
Business of Home chatted with the multitalented creative about her new role, her current inspirations, a soon-to-be-released series of exclusive photography prints for BoConcept, and more.
What most inspires you creatively?
I am inspired by everything around me on a daily basis: nature, city scenes, clouds, water, books, music, art, graffiti, food, people and animals. I try to absorb life as much as possible.
What excites you about furniture and design?
That every piece reveals something about the designer. That someone’s idea can speak to someone, and end up being an object in their home. I also have a lot of respect for artisanal craftsmanship and the sheer talent of people who design and create.
How would you describe your interior style?
My home very much reflects my inner universe almost as an extension of who I am and what I love. I started traveling and collecting [design objects] at a very young age, and my interior style has evolved along with my growing collection.
What is your vision for BoConcept? Do you have a mission?
Having the opportunity to be part of the BoConcept team is a huge honor and an exciting opportunity. I hope to incorporate the aesthetic elements I am most passionate about—fluid shapes, natural colors and organic materials—into the brand’s designs and campaigns.
What excites you most about the role of global artistic director?
The fact that I get to do something I already am very passionate about: working with interiors and design. Also, to get to learn from a very talented team about the technical logistics of designing and manufacturing collections, while working and collaborating alongside other creative minds.
Tell me a bit about your background in photography. When did you start experimenting with it as a medium?
My father was a typographer and an avid photographer, always carrying a camera around his neck. He was a huge inspiration to me, in much more profound ways than I understood when I was growing up. Looking through the very meticulously organized photo albums he put together, I discovered his talent for light, composition and catching that decisive moment. In my late teens, I backpacked around the world and took photos—mostly bad ones, but my passion was ignited.
What most inspires your photography
When I worked as a model, I had the incredible opportunity to not only travel, but also learn more about photography from some of the most legendary photographers in the world. Taking photographs and catching little moments every day is to me as essential as breathing, and I am immensely grateful to have this passion.
Any insight on your line of exclusive photography prints for BoConcept?
One of my favorite subjects to shoot is flora and fauna, and the prints are inspired by this. The theme will also be carried on in future design and accessories collections.
In what ways has your background in fashion and photography informed your eye for design?
I’ve been interested in design and architecture from a very early age, and being in the fashion business only grew that passion. Having been around creative minds my entire life has kept me wanting to learn and evolve in so many ways. I want to stay inspired and curious and always keep an open mind.
As global artistic director, how would you like to see BoConcept grow?
I am excited about infusing my love of organic colors and textures into the brand’s universe. I think it will be a beautiful collaboration.
