April’s can’t-miss design events

The beginning of spring is a busy time for the design industry, and the longer days are packed with events across the globe. From industry staples like High Point and Salone to first-time debuts like the Design Social showhouse in Atlanta, read on for Business of Home’s monthly calendar highlights, including conferences, trade shows and design discussions—and for more great industry events, check out the BOH calendar here.

Kips Bay President’s Dinner
New York | April 3
The 2023 Kips Bay President’s Dinner will be held at Cipriani 42nd Street, with design icon Bunny Williams as honorary chair and designers Jamie Drake and Corey Damen Jenkins as chairs. Louisiana-raised and California-based interior designer Suzanne Rheinstein will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the money raised will go toward supporting children and teens in the Bronx through enrichment programs. The event precedes the May opening of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York, which is returning for the first time since 2019. For more information, click here.

NYSID Annual Gala
New York | April 11
The New York School of Interior Design’s largest fundraising event of the year will honor interior designer Suzanne Tucker with the Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award; Heller president and CEO John Edelman with the Larry Kravet Design Industry Leadership Award; and interior designer Peti Lau, a NYSID graduate, as its rising star. Proceeds from the event will go to the school’s scholarship funds, which include the general scholarship fund, diversity scholarship fund and the fund for the precollege program. Atlanta Design Social House
Atlanta | April 13–15
The Design Social Pop-Up, created in 2019 to connect interior designers with boutique trade brands, will host its first-ever showhouse at art adviser and gallerist Gregg Irby’s house in Atlanta. The pop-up will feature installations of select work from Design Social participants, also offering creatives the opportunity to shop industry brands and hear from Business of Home editor in chief Kaitlin Petersen and Veranda editor in chief Steele Marcoux. Design ADAC
Atlanta | April 18–20
Co-sponsored by Veranda and free to attend, Design ADAC (Atlanta Decorative Arts Center) welcomes attendees for three days of events featuring industry experts from around the world. Highlights include a keynote presentation on table styling with fashion designer, author and lifestyle curator Lela Rose; a panel discussion about building a firm with Oakland, California–based architect John Ike, Dallas- and New York–based interior designer Jean Liu, and Houston-based designer and creative director Benjamin Johnston; and a celebration honoring the 2023 Southeast Designers & Architect of the Year. Salone del Mobile
Milan | April 18–23
Salone del Mobile returns for its 61st edition this year, with a new general exhibition layout. Geared toward a user-friendly approach, the new setup will be in the shape of an irregular, polygonal ring created by Italian architecture studio Lombardini22. The event will include SaloneSatellite, which will highlight emerging designers and be held inside the pavilions of Euroluce, a lighting show happening at the same time. Housing Works Design on a Dime Event
New York | April 19–22
For the 18th year, the Design on a Dime event returns to benefit Housing Works, which was founded by interior designer James Huniford with a mission to end homelessness and AIDS. Co-chaired by interior designers Joy Moyler, Rayman Boozer, Elissa Grayer, Jamie Drake, Charlotte Moss, Young Huh, David Kaihoi and Miles Redd, the shopping event will feature more than 50 vignettes curated by interior designers—including Jeremiah Brent and Nate Berkus, Ken Fulk, Jean Liu and Susie Novak—that showcase for-sale home decor merchandise donated by hundreds of brands and makers marked at up to 80 percent off retail prices. International Window Coverings Expo
Charlotte | April 20–21
Hosted at the Charlotte Convention Center, this event is the nation’s largest networking and educational exposition for window treatment professionals, held annually since 1986. Window fashion decorators, designers, retailers, architects, installers, remodelers and stagers can attend to discover leading industry suppliers, new products and connections during a series of seminars and workshops. High Point Spring Market
High Point, North Carolina | April 22–26
The home furnishings industry’s largest trade show returns, occupying more than 10 million square feet with nearly 2,000 exhibitors spread across 180 buildings. Join the 70,000 to 80,000 attendees representing 100 countries for a plethora of product debuts and events featuring designers, craftsmen and home brands alike. Highlights include a keynote presentation about building a design business moderated by Business of Home’s Dennis Scully with big industry names like Joanna Gaines, Amber Lewis, Julia Marcum from Chris Loves Julia, and Carrier and Company’s Mara Miller and Jesse Carrier; a panel about sourcing art with fine art photographer Allyson Monson and fine art painter Eleanor Scott Davis moderated by BOH editor in chief Kaitlin Petersen; and a live recording of The Business of Home Podcast to celebrate its fifth anniversary, featuring a conversation with designer Thom Filicia. Additionally, the two-day Vacation Rental Design Summit—produced by High Point x Design and High Point Market Authority—will debut with a roster of more than 25 speakers from the design and short-term-rental worlds to highlight an emerging community of professionals passionate about the industry. Dialogues on Design With Nate Berkus
New York | April 26
NYSID’s Dialogues on Design discussions—moderated by The Business of Home Podcast host Dennis Scully—returned to in-person programming this year. The series kicked off in November and returned to on-site programming at the New York School of Interior Design in the new year, featuring talks with interior designer Kia Weatherspoon and landscape designer Janice Parker. This month, the series features a conversation between Scully and design icon Nate Berkus, focusing on the core values and acumen that drive the design decisions and the business direction for his firm. The Philadelphia Show
Philadelphia | April 28–30
The 61st edition of art, antiques and design fair The Philadelphia Show will take place at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, featuring more than 40 dealers in the U.S. that specialize in fine art, design, antiques, Americana, folk art, ceramics, porcelain, silver, jewelry, textiles and decorative arts. Leading up to the in-person event, the show will present a series of four virtual programs for the public about antiques, art and design. During the fair, numerous dealers will lead conversations about early American furniture and midcentury modern design, and some will offer guided tours of the show, providing tips on acquiring objects and collecting. San Francisco Decorator Showcase
San Francisco | April 29–May 29
The 44th annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase will return to a live, in-person event at an 18th-century Mediterranean Spanish home located in the city’s Sea Cliff neighborhood. Built in 1927 by lauded architects Hyman and Appleton, the 6,100-square-foot home features three levels with 28 design spaces—including seven bedrooms, five full baths, a gym, a movie room and a variety of entertaining spaces. Re-imagined by a slate of top designers including Noz Nozawa, Russell Martinelli, Kimberly Denman and Chantal Lamberto, the space will open to the public from April 29 to May 29, with proceeds to benefit San Francisco University High School.
