Studio SFW’s warm medley of colored leather, burnt silver and tiger prints

In the BOH series What I Love, we’re asking designers to build us a mood board of what’s inspiring them right now.

Rachael Stollar, Erin Fearins and Ward Welch know that the right materials make all the difference in an interior. The trio behind New York design firm Studio SFW rely on the rich, earthy hues and tactile textures of organic pieces to infuse their projects with warmth and sophistication. “We want to create comfortable, enveloping spaces that our clients love to be in,” Fearins tells Business of Home.

Though the three designers’ mood board is grounded in soft neutral tones and classic finishes, they incorporated an assortment of eye-catching elements—think: avant-garde textile art and a rainbow of glossy ceramic table glazes—to energize the scheme. “We had particular artworks in mind for the project that inspired this flat lay,” says Fearins. “So we developed a color palette that supports those pieces and allows them to shine.”

A well-layered mix of lush earth tones draws the design together, while the occasional zip of graphic motif or pigmented hue adds contrast and interest to the montage. “The vibe of this flat lay is colorful and welcoming,” adds the designer. “It feels luxurious but livable.”

Here, Fearins breaks down the details, from herringbone-patterned upholstery to an antiqued mirror sample.
