Consider Tréca Paris the Rolls-Royce of beds. Founded in 1935, the Alsace, France–based brand specializes in couture-quality custom-made mattresses and frames, producing all elements in-house, from pocket springs to woodwork and upholstery. “Our work is inspired by the French art of living and a profound commitment to transforming sleep into an art form—what we call le savoir-dormir à la française,” chief marketing officer Virginie Hamon tells Business of Home.
Originally a spring factory that manufactured suspensions for cars, the company shifted its focus to mattresses during World War II, when the French army was in dire need of comfortable beds. By 1955, the brand expanded its production with headboards and bed bases, and the rest is high-end design history. “We design complete bedroom environments, to transform bedrooms into sanctuaries,” says Hamon.
Every Tréca Paris bed is a masterpiece of French craftsmanship. Handmade at one of the brand’s two ateliers—located in Alsace and Mer—each piece touches more than two dozen hands from start to finish and takes over 100 steps to complete. The Auguste bed, for instance, requires 39 artisans to create, including 25 to construct—and test—the mattress. “Our artisans range from master upholsterers and spring specialists to seamstresses and embroiderers,” says Hamon. “This ensures uncompromising quality control at every production stage, and enables us to offer fully bespoke solutions.”
One of those artisans, Sonia Schmitt, has been with the company for 15 years and serves as the head of its decoration workshop, where she oversees all the intricate details: hand-sewn finishes, ornamental stitching and personalized monograms. “Custom orders require precise cutting and sewing techniques for both fabric and leather,” she explains. “We use specialized sewing machines adapted to different materials, cutting tools for precision work, and upholstery equipment for mounting and assembling headboards.”
Customization plays a pivotal role in all of Tréca Paris’s designs. Beds can be made in any shape, size or dimension, with made-to-measure mattresses and headboards adorned in everything from hand-placed buttons to contrast piping. “Each material presents its own challenges,” says Schmitt. “Leather requires specific needles and careful handling to avoid marking, while printed fabrics demand precise pattern alignment.”
Materiality is also key to the brand. Tréca Paris uses only the finest all-natural materials for its designs, including merino wool, royal alpaca, mohair, hemp, linen and cotton. Prioritizing organic alternatives, the brand has even developed plant-based glue and foam-free filler for its mattresses. “Natural materials ensure durability and longevity, while reducing waste,” Hamon says.
It’s no surprise that Tréca Paris has become a favorite of big-name brands and interior designers alike, and its designs pop up in unexpected places like luxury yachts and private jets and boutique hotels. Past collaborations include the round 1970s-style Marguerite bed for Studio Uchronia at Maison&Objet, and a pop-up showroom at the Printemps flagship in New York, featuring four of the French atelier’s signature designs, including a leather-upholstered Poésie and a Pierre Frey velvet–clad Versailles.
“The variety keeps our craft interesting and rewarding,” says Schmitt. “The ability to work on bespoke pieces in all dimensions means no two days are the same.”
