Showroom Spotlight
“New York is still, to me, the most exciting, most dynamic, most creative city in the world,” Peter Dunham tells Business of Home. The interior designer, textile and furniture designer, and retailer behind beloved Los Angeles design shop Hollywood at Home recently unveiled Peter Dunham Home & Garden at the New York Design Center, his first outpost in the city.
The designer strived to pull together a space that felt more like a residence he might create for his clients than a traditional showroom in midtown Manhattan. “If you could blot out the fact that you’re looking over a building on 32nd Street, you could almost feel like you’re in a house in the Hamptons, or in an apartment or a loft,” says Dunham. “That was the idea [behind] creating destinations.” To do that, he carved the 3,500-square-foot space into individual vignettes—sitting rooms, a living room, a bedroom and a dining room—divided by movable bookshelves that offer ample storage and interior walls to showcase the brand’s wallcoverings.
While Hollywood at Home offers a mix of his designs and represented brands, the New York showroom is pure Dunham, filled with his textiles, made-to-order and in-stock furnishings and products, and vintage items sourced from across the globe. Upon entry into the space, guests are greeted by a huge painting of two tigers. He purchased the piece at an auction years ago, and it has been rolled up under his desk ever since, waiting for the perfect spot. It now hangs above a couch outfitted in his Kashmir Paisley print flanked and by two stools in a colorful geometric fabric. The living room features a playful striped wallpaper and a 9-foot antique mantel Dunham got from an Upper West Side townhouse. “Nobody’s going to believe it’s a working fireplace, but it gives me a piece of architecture that can ground the room,” he says.
The designer also blanketed a windowed corner vignette with his Fig Leaf motif to create a light-filled space that feels like an alfresco escape and is used to display garden items, indoor-outdoor cushions, outdoor textiles and a teak furniture collection.
A corner showroom was a major selling point, but Dunham’s decision to take up residence at 200 Lex was no impulsive move—he had been planning to open a space a year earlier, only to get cold feet after the writer’s strike in Los Angeles. Then, the double showroom opened up, and he couldn’t resist any longer. “A lot of it was to do with the space, but to be honest, that’s only part of it,” he says. “A big percentage of it is [NYDC president and CEO] Jim Druckman and his team, and how he’s been able to really focus the building into a premier destination for design.”
Dunham hopes that guests who enter his new space will feel a sense of wonder. “For me, what differentiates an interesting showroom from a run-of-the-mill, efficient showroom is the mysterious vibe,” he says. “The vibe that attracts people to come and shop and relax and touch and feel is to be a little bit transported.” 200 Lexington Ave., Suite 715, New York
