Showroom Spotlight
West Coast meets East Coast in the new Manhattan Lawson-Fenning showroom. The Los Angeles–based design brand, known for its handcrafted furniture and curated selection of ceramics and home accessories, unveiled its first-ever location beyond its home city, set in the vibrant neighborhood of NoHo.

Co-founders Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning tapped New York–based interior designer Josh Greene to design the space. A longtime friend and collaborator of the brand, Greene was working on a furniture collection with the duo (set to release later this year) when they decided to open a new outpost. “How do we create a space that takes this brand that has a very specific California energy and point of view, but pivot that for a New York space?” Greene tells Business of Home. “That was the big challenge.”
Greene accomplished just that, transforming a raw, 4,500-square-foot loft into a design destination. “We’re very rooted to our Southern California aesthetic and vibe, and that’s our language. We were like, ‘What does it look like for a brand like ours to be in New York?’” says Lawson. They had stumbled upon the vacant space while visiting one of the lighting designers they carry, Danny Kaplan, whose live-work studio is on the floor below. “Some people in the building live there, and there are other showrooms in the building. [That] mix was interesting to us, because we could really set this up like a true residential showroom,” says Lawson. “We wanted it to feel like the most luxe residential loft that you could imagine.”

The open space is deftly divided into a series of vignettes, using elegant walnut wing-walls and subtle shifts in color to carve out a living room, dining room, entry space, library, and color-drenched back room that resembles a studio apartment. “We needed a way to divide up the space because we didn’t want it to be a sea of furniture,” says Greene. “We wanted to be able to break it up into zones that felt more residential in their scale.” The colors in the palette—deep burgundy, rich mustard, earthy terra cotta—all evoke a sense of California’s natural landscape; the fully functioning kitchen, which is meant to feel more like a bar, and two bathrooms feature showstopping clay- and pink-colored stone counters. “All of the colors work together, but it’s a little bit more sophisticated for New York,” he explains. The spaces are united by walnut trim that serves as a datum, with everything above it painted a more neutral hue. “It brings down the scale of the space so the residential furniture feels appropriate even though it’s in this giant industrial space,” he adds.

The primary items on display are the brand’s customizable furniture collection in nonstandard finishes and fabrics—at the moment, several floor pieces feature Zak+Fox upholstery—to show the possibilities of the product. Lawson-Fenning also represents makers whose works are showcased throughout the space, including shelving in the “library” brimming with pieces by New York–based ceramist Devin Wilde (including his soon-to-be-released ceramic side table, Table No. 1), lighting designer James Cherry, ceramics company Canoa Lab, and furniture studio O&G. “It was an honor to help Glenn and Grant take this amazing brand that they’ve built, which has such California DNA, and establish it for New Yorkers in a way that was still true to their brand,” says Greene. 417 Lafayette St., Floor 5, New York
