With a focus on high-end artisanal goods and a commitment to local production, Portland’s design scene is rife with inspiration. To celebrate The Shade Store’s new showroom at 1117 NW Everett Street, the company presents EAL’s latest local designer’s guide. Alison Fedderson of Garrison Hullinger Interior Design shared her take on the city’s “casual and collected design scene.”

In Portland, shares Fedderson, “We are known for our handcrafted artisans and the fight to keep things local.” The must-shop boutiques include Christopher David, Bedford Brown, The Joinery, CanoeAlder & Co. and Palace Store.

What are Portland’s hidden design finds?
“There are so many!” says Fedderson. “Mississippi Avenue and SE Division Street are great shopping neighborhoods for handmade gifts. We love Paxton Gate on Mississippi, and Artifact on Division, both great unique and well-curated home stores. NW 23rd Avenue has revamped itself as a hot spot with many new store openings.” Looking to head off the beaten path? “[The Portland neighborhood] Sellwood has a great shopping scene for collectors; my all-time favorites include Please Be Seated and Justin & Burks.”

“I am very excited about The Shade Store’s intro to the Portland market,” says the designer. “It will be fun to explore and send our clients to this dedicated window shading boutique.”

Where do you find inspiration locally?
The designer makes her way Portland Art Museum. She also suggests checking out architecture downtown, stopping by Mount Tabor Park, and hitting the vintage shops throughout SE Portland, where “the inspiration is endless!”

Where do you take clients for lunch or coffee?
“We love taking our clients to Produce Row Café or ClarkLewis for lunch right by our offices. For coffee, Coava Coffee and Water Avenue are our go-tos, hands down!”
