At its February 25 Leadership Awards gala, the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation will recognize Interior Design editor in chief Cindy Allen for championing women in design. BWAF’s mission is “to change the culture of the building industry so that women’s work, whether in contemporary practices or historical narratives, is acknowledged, respected and valued.” The organization partners with museums, professional organizations and other groups in the areas of architecture, design, landscape, engineering, technology, real estate and construction.
The co-chairs of this year’s gala include Aine Brazil of Thornton Tomasetti; Lance Jay Brown of Lance Jay Brown Architecture + Urban Design and City College of New York; Renee Charles of AIG; Anton Germishuizen of Stantec; Jennifer Murphy of STV; and Sylvia Smith of FXFowle.
Allen will receive the Scroll award, which is granted to a media organization or individual, for her work: “She regularly publishes and honors the works of women architects and interior designers, exalting the female leaders in their fields and bringing light to the rising stars. Showing commitment to both the power of design and women’s issues, Allen has ‘walked the walk,’ becoming the authoritative voice in the industry and mentoring many of the women in her organization, the design industry and beyond.”
Other honorees for the 2016 BWAF Leadership Awards include Richard Anderson of New York Building Congress; Julia Donoho of Legal Constructs and AIA National Board of Directors; Gwendolyn Wright of Columbia University; Lori Brown and Nina Freedman of Architexx; and William J. Gilbane Jr. and William J. GIlbane III of Gilbane Building Company.
