A designer's guide to fall markets across the country

BOH rounded up market info at design centers from coast to coast. Read on for more information on big names and programs in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and everywhere in between.

EAST COAST

Boston Design Center
Boston
October 2–3: Boston Design Market

This is a big season for Boston, and the design market reflects that. “We’re especially excited about this year’s theme, ‘World of Textiles,’ which our showrooms have robustly embraced,” BDC general manager Kristan McLaughlin tells Business of Home. Notable panels include a discussion about inspiration between Patrick Frey of Pierre Frey and Clinton Smith of New England Home to celebrate the opening of Pierre Frey’s new showroom; textile designer Lisa Fine and designer Cathy Kincaid in conversation about “how to live in a house”; and StyleRow founder Erinn Valencich on how to hack the millennial approach to designing.

Don’t miss: To close out the market, Chairish Inc.’s director of trade relations Marisa Marcantonio will deliver a presentation on top trends in the digital age, highlighting industry shifts.

October 16–17: DDB Fall Market

In the past, the building has hosted a multitude of well-known industry professionals, and this year looks to be no different. Programming for the fall market has not yet been officially announced, so we can’t share too many details, but we can say that this year’s market will focus on industry growth—including a panel in the Castel showroom with top designers, a financial advisor and BOH’s editor in chief Kaitlin Petersen on how to recession-proof a design business.

Don’t miss: Candice Bergen is on a keynote panel in the Stark showroom.

FLORIDA

South Florida Design Park
Hollywood, Florida
September 26: Showroom day

In late September, the South Florida Design Park will stage a day of showroom parties to celebrate the new season. J Nelson hosts an open house at its showroom as it debuts new product from Anees Furniture & Design;and Jerry Pair holds a trunk show for new product from Boyd Lighting, Luciano Marcato textiles, Dedar, Nobilis and other brands.

Don’t miss: The most high profile is a 6 p.m. soiree to celebrate the opening of Kravet’s new location—Thom Filicia will be there, and guests can peruse new products from Kravet and its sister brands Lee Jofa and Brunschwig & Fils.

November 7: Fall Market

While programming is still being finalized, talks on smart home technology and holistic, wellness-focused design are on the docket, as well as a few big product launches—like designer Nicole Hollis debuting her latest collaboration with McGuire.

MIDWEST

Design Center at the Merchandise Mart
Chicago
October 2–3: Design Chicago

Hosted by LuxeHome and Design Center at the Mart, Design Chicago is held annually at the local convention center. Over two full days of programming are complimentary for those in the trade; featured programs include a panel on integrated technology in the kitchen and bath space with the NKBA, as well as a panel on how to get new clients through Instagram with designers Dan Rak, Stacey Kallenbach and Hayley O’Hara. “Design Chicago is like a design family reunion—it’s great to see the friendly faces of our peers, meet new people and connect with others in the industry,” local designers Christina Samatas and Renee DiSanto, who have a panel on October 2, tell BOH. “From marketing to photography to client relations, there are always areas where we can give back and share the lessons we’ve learned along the way.”

SOUTHEAST

September 23–25: Fall Design Week

September 24–26: Discover ADAC

The two design centers, now both owned and operated by IMC, are working together for the first time, making this fall’s market an extra-special destination. In addition to robust programming at each location, there will also be a shuttle between the two when events overlap on the 24th and 25th. At AmericasMart, Atlanta magazine will release its fall issue of Home and suite of seminars will cover how to travel with projects, develop a trade team and capitalize on the holidays, among other programming. At ADAC, Timothy Corrigan will discuss elegance, while designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller will share tips on how to keep things chic. “This year’s Discover ADAC is set to be one of the best representations of international and female talent we have ever had,” ADAC general manager Katie Miner tells BOH. “Over the course of three days, guests will join us to unlock their design potential: to break through boundaries, explore new sources of inspiration, reveal unseen possibilities and create a vision and style that is authentic to who they are.”

Don’t miss: Kravet hosts BOH editor in chief Kaitlin Petersen for a conversation with Susan Sully, author of Southern Hospitality at Home: The Art of Gracious Living, designer Susan Bozeman and architect Norman Askins about the art of creating a warm, welcoming home—for guests, but also for everyday living.

High Point Market
High Point, North Carolina
October 19–23: Fall Market

Need help navigating the 2,000 exhibitors in High Point? High Point Market hosts its popular Style Spotters Trend Tours, sponsored by Crypton and Studio Designer, to help new and seasoned visitors alike. The tours have expanded to include both designers highlighting their favorite Market destinations and category-specific itineraries. This fall, “Favorites” tours will be held on the morning of the 22nd, led by Shayla Copas, Kara Cox, Benjamin Johnston and Courtney McLeod. No RSVP is necessary to attend. “Category” tours are two hours long and cover four showrooms: On the 19th, Laura Thurman will lead attendees through showrooms with a global inspiration and Gary Inman will look at hospitality; on the 20th, Eric Haydel will focus his tour on antiques and reproductions and Erinn Valencich will look at designer-friendly furniture; and on the 21st, Cynthia Ferguson will explore textiles. For category tours, an RSVP is required.

TEXAS

Dallas Market Center
Dallas
September 23–26: Dallas Design Week

The largest event of the week is Dine + Design on September 24, a CEU-accredited lunch with hundreds of designers that serves as the launchpad of paint company Sherwin-Williams’s color forecast for 2020. “We expect more than 1,000 designers to attend events across the more than 1.5 million square feet of design showrooms,” Cole Daugherty, senior vice president of marketing at the DMC, tells BOH. “This is a week of events, but more importantly, it’s a week of community building inside dozens of design showrooms that are open daily. We realize how important it is for designers to have strong relationships with resources to help them expand their business.”

Don’t miss: A panel on September 26 features artist Jan Barboglio, Peacock Alley founder May Ella Gabler and designer Denise McGaha talking about iconic women in design.

October 30: Fall Market

In keeping with this market’s theme, “Timeless vs. Trends,” panels, CEUs and programming will focus on current and future trends, the relevance of historical buildings, as well as smart home technology.

SOuthWEST

Scottsdale Design District
Scottsdale, AZ
November 7th: Desert Design Days

This year, Scottsdale's design district hosts a day of events including workshops on LED lighting and design for commercial spaces.

Don’t miss: Keynote addresses by Vern Yip and Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller of Carrier & Co.

WEST COAST

Pacific Design Center
Los Angeles
September 26: Fall Market

This year, the PDC Fall Market strikes an inspiring note, focusing on how design can influence a well-lived life. Programming features insights from notable industry professionals like interior designers Natasha Baradaran, Gen Sohr and Estee Stanley; Interiors editor in chief Erika Heet; and renowned entertainer Lulu Powers.

Don’t miss: Start the day with author, speaker and former House Beautiful editor in chief Sophie Donelson, who is on deck to moderate a keynote panel exploring how people in creative industries become tastemakers and curators.
