The 87th Academy Awards heralded the 13th consecutive year that Architectural Digest produced its signature backstage lounge for presenters and honorees at the awards.

The 2015 greenroom was produced by Los Angeles-based design collective Commune, which consulted with actress Julianne Moore on the room’s aesthetic and ambiance. Moore herself is no stranger to design; Architectural Digest’s March 2012 edition featured her Greenwich Village garden.

Commune chose the classic midcentury homes of Mulholland Drive as inspiration, opting for a light-filled, modernist look that exemplified Southern California indoor-outdoor style.

“We were inspired by the greats who worked here—from Frank Lloyd Wright to Billy Haines,” said Commune co-founder Roman Alonso. “It’s not about Old Hollywood—it’s about insider Hollywood. It’s as if Joan Didion is having you over for drinks on your way to the Oscars.”

The greenroom incorporated products by Architectural Digest’s partners, including Bernardaud, Caesarstone, Clarence House, Emtek, Holly Hunt, Perennials, Remains Lighting, Samsung, Sherwin-Williams, Stark, Sutherland and Walker Zanger, among others.

The room also featured several custom elements as a nod to the 1950s’ and 1960s’ iconic designs, including a “window” made of 16 Samsung displays. These streamed a day-to-night view of the city from Hollywood Hills.

“For this year’s AD Greenroom, we wanted something that felt personal and very casual – a place for entertaining, California style. We wanted a room that is glamorous whether you are wearing a bikini or a gown,” said Alonso. More on Commune's creation process and inspiration can be found here.
