Winter Market in South Florida draws top names

Clodagh, Alexa Hampton and Mario Buatta are among the designers heading to South Florida to deliver keynotes as part of Winter Market, February 5 and 6, at the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA). The two-day event will be chock full of showroom programs, panel discussions, book signings and open houses featuring some of today’s most notable designers. Here’s a closer look at each of the keynote presentations.

Clodagh

Clodagh will kick off market on Wednesday, February 5, at 11:00 a.m. in Atrium C with her presentation, Enhancing Wellness Through Total Design. She will speak about her “life-enhancing design” which engages all the senses and provokes a feeling of true wellbeing.

Alexa Hampton

Next up, Alexa Hampton will take attendees through her process of selecting details for the homes she designs at 1:00 p.m. in Atrium C. In her latest book, Decorating in Detail, she shares the development process for eight homes in locations from New York City to New Orleans. Hampton will discuss the book, and a signing and reception will follow the presentation.

Mario Buatta

The last keynote of the day begins at 3:00 p.m. in Atrium C and will feature the legendary Mario Buatta as he discusses and share insights from his first book, Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration, which includes rooms he designed for clients including Henry Ford II, Barbara Walters, Malcolm Forbes, Mariah Carey and the presidential guest quarters.

Barclay Butera

Day two of market, Thursday, February 6, will begin with a keynote in Atrium B at 11:30 a.m. featuring “Approachable Design,” with Drew Limsky of Modern Luxuries Media’s South Florida Interiors Magazine moderating a discussion between designers Barclay Butera and Thomas Paul. Butera and Paul will discuss how to bring high style into everyday living. A lunch reception will follow at the Duralee showroom, Suite C-100, followed by dessert, coffee and a book signing at Kravet, Suite B180.

Between each of these keynote presentations, showrooms will open their doors for guests to browse new collections and have a bite to eat. A breakdown of the two-day schedule follows.

Wednesday, February 5

Attendees will have the chance to meet and greet the Owners of O. Henry House, Ltd., a North Carolina-based upholstery company, at the John Rosselli & Associates showroom, Suite A-128. A light breakfast will be served beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Dee Cornett from Hartmann & Forbes will show guests how wallcoverings can change the mood and environment of a room in the Jeffrey Michaels showroom, Suite A-168 also at 10:00 a.m.

JANUS et Cie, Suite A-123, will host a book signing by landscape architect Mario Nievera featuring his title Forever Green. The book shows photographs of diverse gardens and landscapes, and how Nievera integrates interior and exterior spaces. Cocktails and light refreshments will be served at 2:00 p.m. RSVP for this event.

Charles S. Cohen, president and CEO of DCOTA, will honor the 2014 Stars of Design and Stars on the Rise at 6:00 p.m. The ceremony will spotlight the best in various fields of design including interior design, architecture, art, photography, graphic design and landscape design as well as special award for lifetime achievement.

The day will conclude at 7:00 p.m. with the gallery opening reception for Nancy Ellison’s “Altered Egos”—a retrospective exhibition of over 100 photographs by the Los Angeles-born portrait author and photojournalist. The exhibition consists of 114 works spanning Ellison’s career shooting notable talent, including Pierce Brosnan, Jack Nicholson, Mick Jagger, Orson Welles, Sharon Stone, Sean Penn, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Dustin Hoffman and more.  

The following showrooms will host open houses on Wednesday: Cowtan & Tout (Suite B-254), Donghia (Suite C-250), Jeffrey Michaels (Suite A-168), Jolo Enterprises (Suite C-428), Judith Norman (Suite A-520), Romo (Suite C-162), Siematic Kitchens (Suite C-336), Wired Custom Lighting (Suite C-236) and Decorative Crafts (Suite B-218).

Thursday, February 6

Bill Calhoun from ARTE will show attendees how wallcoverings can change the mood and environment of a room at the Jeffrey Michaels showroom, Suite A-168 at 10:00 a.m.

Ellison will take attendees through her “Altered Egos” exhibition at 3:00 p.m., which is on view at DCOTA through April 11.
