Thirty new design stores and showrooms opening now

Few things get a designer more excited than a fresh new showroom. The search for that elusive piece may never end, but what is design if not a beautiful march into the decorative unknown? Across the country, Editor at Large has tracked 30 new shops, sources and retail seductions to get the heart pounding. Read on for the list of openings by region.

New York, NY 

Gabriel Scott has opened the doors to its first flagship showroom located at the iconic Brewster Carriage House, a building once home to the world’s most distinguished coach makers of the 20th century. The showroom features a series of black-steel and brass occasional tables and handcrafted suspended light fixtures that are bold, architectural and customizable in size, color and form. A grand opening event will take place in October, officially introducing the showroom to the New York design community. Details to be announced. (372 Broome Street)

Several high-profile companies including AERIN, Dune, E.J. Victor, KI | Pallas Textiles, LEPERE, Potterton Books and Studio A have joined a group of more than 100 showrooms spread across 16 floors of the New York Design Center this season. (200 Lexington Avenue)

Thibaut has opened its doors in the D&D Building, and Waterworks Kitchen, Christopher Spitzmiller, George Smith and Scalamandre aren’t far behind—some opening in time for Fall Market on Wednesday, October 15 and Thursday, October 16. (979 Third Avenue)

Marc Blackwell, known for his tabletop designs and curated accessories, has opened his company’s first-ever showroom and design space outside of Manhattan. Marc Blackwell New York/This Life! in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, pays homage to the stylish yet sophisticated neighborhood located off the L train. The 3,000 sf space will serve as a lifestyle/concept shop—part retail, part design salon—where  visitors and locals alike can drop in, have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and relax upon comfy sofas (all for sale) while checking out the Marc Blackwell New York line and/or can reap the benefits of interior design services. Julius Lowy's showroom has recently moved into a newly renovated, 4,000 sf space in the Fine Arts Building on East 59th Street. The company was founded in 1907 and remains a specialist in all aspects of framing. Framing consultants provide personalized assistance in everything from conservation and restoration to aesthetically appropriate antique, reproduction and contemporary frames. Chamber, a new boutique of limited-edition design, objects and art, has opened in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. The space’s unique concept and retail experience is the vision of Argentinian-born founder Juan Garcia Mosqueda. Award-winning architectural practice MOS has designed the interior of the space, which is located underneath the High Line. (515 West 23rd Street)

Coterie Interiors has opened a new studio and retail shop in Roslyn, Long Island. The space will double as a place to brainstorm and meet with clients and feature a  selection of soft goods, art, home décor and accessories for sale. (1390 Old Northern Boulevard, Roslyn)

German upholsterer Rolf Benz has opened a new showroom in partnership with Studio Anise. The 5,000 sf lifestyle showroom will feature an exclusive array of Rolf Benz including the new Nova sofa which will be shown in the U.S. for the first time. (21 Greene Street)

Spin Ceramics, which implements ancient Chinese techniques and traditions to create elegantly modern porcelain pieces, has opened a flagship store in Soho. (13 Crosby Street)

Benjamin Rugs and Furniture, owned by Benny Aziz and his wife, interior designer Stephanie Cohen, has opened a new store in Farmingdale. The showroom provides interior design services, furniture, rugs and accessories for all areas of the home. (1710 Broadhollow Road)

Colony, founded and curated by Jean Lin, is a new store that features a community of independent designers who create furniture, lighting, textiles and objects on a New York City stage to celebrate American design with an international audience. (324 Canal Street, Second Floor)

West Hollywood, CA

Reagan Hayes, Inc., manufacturer of bench-made furniture, has opened a new flagship showroom in Suite B300 of the Pacific Design Center. The showroom features sofas, lounge chairs, dining chairs and newly introduced tables as well as drawings by the highly acclaimed, Los Angeles-based artist Peter Walker and abstract paintings from Amanda Talley of New Orleans, in addition to an assortment of antique accessories and lighting. Malibu, CA

Making its debut at the Trancas Country Market, luxury home furnishings and décor store Malibu Beach House is a new retail venture by designers Lisa Houge and Laura Burdge. Drawing inspiration from California’s coastal beauty, it features high-end furnishings and décor, tabletop items, luxurious bedding and bath, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and lighting. In addition, the shop represents exclusive fabric collections by California designers Barclay Butera and Peggy Platner, and will also showcase lines by Kathryn Ireland and Ralph Lauren. Berkeley, CA

Centered in the emerging creative hotbed of the San Pablo Corridor in Berkeley, Spacepop is a mecca for modern curiosities of furniture, art and décor. Inspired by all things bright, eclectic and spiritual, Spacepop founder Jack Mueller and business partner Czelena Carter aim to cultivate an independent aesthetic with each unique piece. More than a retail destination, Spacepop is presented as a multidimensional creative space deeply rooted in artistic discovery and collaboration and features one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. Chicago, IL

Luxury custom cabinetry manufacturer Wood-Mode has announced the opening of its first ever Wood-Mode Lifestyle Design Center in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. The showroom will be located in LuxeHome section on the first floor of the Merchandise Mart in Suite 119, and will be a showcase for the latest product releases and Wood-Mode lifestyle design themes. The space will present styles ranging from traditional to transitional and contemporary for the kitchen, bath and beyond. (222 West Merchandise Mart Plaza, Chicago)

Seattle, WA

Designer Timothy De Clue is opening a new retail showroom in downtown Seattle’s Harbor Steps building. This new home décor store called Timothy De Clue Collection invites customers to create their personal design lifestyle by choosing from an expanded home decor collection. The showroom will also feature an expanded apothecary department, and will carry luxury bedding and soft home goods, as well as art, lighting, furniture, gifts, stationary and vintage finds. Houston, TX

The Decorative Center Houston has welcomed two new showrooms this season, COUCH, which carries custom beds, chairs ottomans, sectionals and sofas, as well as The Shade Store, which crafts custom window treatments. (5120 Woodway Drive, Houston)

Birmingham, MI

West Elm will open its first store in Birmingham, Michigan, in early October. The 15,000 sf site is located in the downtown area and will open with West Elm’s fall assortment, which includes an expanded collection of lighting, new collaborations and handcrafted pieces from Haiti, India, Peru and the Philippines. It will also spotlight a curated selection of products made in Michigan as part of West Elm’s “Local” initiative, which the company launched earlier this year to tap into local entrepreneurship. Aventura, FL

Roche Bobois plans to open a 4,500 sf showroom in Aventura, Florida. The new showroom will be in addition to two other Florida locations—Coral Gables and North Palm Beach. The new showroom will take the company's total store count to 250 and will showcase the complete line of Roche Bobois products. (Intersection between Aventura and Biscayne Blvd.)

China

High-end case goods and upholstery manufacturer Chaddock has opened new retail locations in China, including a freestanding store in Ningbo and an in-store display at another established retailer in Dalian. The Ningbo location is a 3,900 sf store in Ningbo Housing International Home Plaza, a furniture shopping center in the city. Chaddock is also occupying 4,300 sf in Wendi Home, an interior design showroom in the Zhongshan District of Dalian.
