Tali Roth’s nostalgic mix of cashmere carpeting, colorful marbles and Venetian plaster finishes

In the BOH series What I Love, we’re asking designers to build us a mood board of what’s inspiring them right now.

Tali Roth
Tali RothLillie Thompson

Tali Roth likes to cultivate spaces that tell a story. The Melbourne-based designer gravitates toward playfully patterned pieces made in timeless materials to create intimate rooms that provide insight about the inhabitants.

Consider her current flat lay an excellent case in point. Though she resides in the Land Down Under, the bulk of Roth’s projects are based in New York—and lately, the Instagram FOMO is hitting hard. “I am experiencing the depths of the icy winter here [in Australia], while watching my colleagues experience the most amazing warm and oceanic-inspired summer,” she told Business of Home last month. “The tones in the palette elicit a sense of comfort, but it also connects to the longing of the New York summer I so desperately miss.”

Much like her interiors—and current state of mind—Roth’s design features a well-balanced blend of warm and cool hues energized by a handful of zippy graphic motifs. “The mood of the scheme is in the eye of the beholder,” she explains. “I also have been experimenting with more blues and grays, and how to juxtapose them with my favorite camel and caramel hues.”

Here, the designer breaks down the details, from lightning bolt–clad raffia wallcoverings to pastel passementerie trims.

1. FLASH WALLCOVERING IN PISTACHIO BY KIRKBY DESIGN

“This wallpaper makes such a statement, but is still subtle enough that you could use it in an entire space. The raffia texture gives it a sense of timelessness, and the shapes of the ‘flames’ complement a lot of the curves I use in my designs, including my lighting range.”

2. BABETTE TRIM IN GUSTAVIAN BLUE BY INGE HOLST

“This incredible bullion trim brings soft furnishings to life. I love putting old-world accessories on contemporary pieces.”

3. FORGET-ME-NOT FABRIC IN ACQUA BY RUBELLI

“I love the richness of the history of this fabric, but with contemporary colors and trim it is seen in a whole new light.”

4. ROMAN TRAVERTINE, BLUE MARINE AND VERDE ANTIGUA BY BAS STONE

“These are all perfect transitional marbles, with Travertine being earthy, timeless and raw, and the accents of the Blue Marine and Verde Antigua sitting with the beige so beautifully to create a layered, contemporary and fun approach to a space.”

5. GALET RUG IN INDIGO BY BREMWORTH WOOL RUGS

“This looped wool carpet in indigo is perfect for bedrooms as it’s super grounding and durable.”

6. LOOSE CASHMERE CARPET IN GREY BY MARC PHILLIPS

“This is the most indulgent carpet of all time. The handle is amazing, and the color is super cool but flexible and works with lots of things.”

7. SELENITE CRYSTAL

“My friend gifted this to me at her kundalini-themed baby shower; every designer needs calm and serenity.”

8. CUSTOM VENETIAN PLASTER BY SAN MARCO GROUP

“I absolutely love wall textures. They always look amazing in any tone, but particularly in a cool tone, as it’s a nice tension between the warmness of the applied texture and the coolness of the [color].”

9. ‘DECORATIVE ART 50S’ BY TASCHEN

“I am obsessed with anything midcentury, no matter the project. I am always drawing from an endless amount of inspiration from that era.”

10. TEDDY MOHAIR FABRIC IN BAMBI BY PIERRE FREY

The perfect caramel color that warms up any single space.”

11. DAPPLED BRICK FABRIC IN SKY BLUE BY LUKE EDWARD HALL FOR RUBELLI

“Rubelli’s collaboration with the incredible Luke Edward Hall has provided me with so much personal and professional inspiration. I particularly love this woven fabric they created; schematically, the patterns and geometry work in this flat lay without overwhelming the overall calm feel of the palette.”

12. ARIA SILK BRUSH FRINGE IN VAPOR BY SAMUEL & SONS

“This brush fringe trim looks incredible on the seam of sofas, bed heads and throw cushions.”

13. HELIA FABRIC IN 0733 BY RAF SIMONS FOR KVADRAT

“This is an excellent tight boucle in sky blue that works for everyone. The composition and handle are super durable and flexible.”

14. AFUA FABRIC IN WALNUT BY SISTER BY STUDIO ASHBY FOR YARN COLLECTIVE

“I love the simplicity of the geometry and stars with the heaviness of the yarn. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and it straddles the line between California cool and English Country.”

15. CANDLE BY COUR DES VOSGES AT EVOK

“This candle is from one of the most amazing hotels I have seen, Cour des Vosges in Paris, and the smell is endlessly inspiring because it transports me there.”
