In the BOH series What I Love, we’re asking designers to build us a mood board of what’s inspiring them right now.
Nina Magon loves jewelry. The Houston-based designer gravitates toward statement-making stones and pearlescent finishes when crafting her fashion-forward interiors. “Like good jewelry, certain pieces are timeless—and can instantly elevate an overall look,” she tells Business of Home.
For her current mood board, the designer started with her version of a little black dress: a plush hand-tufted Tai Ping rug with a hazy gray ground and a minimalist graphic motif. Next, she incorporated simple yet sumptuous staples, including stonewashed linen bedding and velvety chenille curtains, to anchor the palette in warm, natural tones. “Neutrals never go out of style,” says Magon.
Finally, she dressed up the scheme with a sprinkling of sophisticated, of-the-moment designs, ranging from dichroic glass samples to fluted, violet-veined marble tile. “This flat lay is a celebration of timeless luxury,” she says. “Each item exudes a sense of opulence and enduring elegance that transcends passing trends.”
Here, the designer breaks down the details, from a silver metallic hide sample to a Cartier bracelet.
1. SATORI STONEWASH FABRIC IN LINEN BY MOKUM AT JAMES DUNLOP TEXTILES
“Linen works wonderfully for bedding, as it looks great even when a little wrinkled and gets softer over time.”
2. TENSION 1 RUG BY TAI PING
“If you want heaven for your feet and a visual feast for your eyes, Tai Ping rugs always deliver and bring such artful sophistication to a room.”
3. LONDON LINEN FABRIC BY SCHUMACHER HOSPITALITY
“I look at this Schumacher Hospitality fabric and instantly see a lovely upholstered bench at the end of a bed in a primary suite. Its color is soft and elegant, and it is super durable, so it is great for wear and tear.”
4. ASPEN WALLCOVERING IN OATMEAL BY CARLISLE & CO.
“This wallpaper has a subtle and chic vibe that I really enjoy. It would make a lovely addition to a powder room.”
5. PERSONAL JEWELRY
“These are a few of my favorite jewelry pieces—including one very important necklace from my grandmother, a Cartier bracelet, and a Bulgari ring—that I wear constantly. I used these pieces as inspiration for my lighting collection with Studio M to create designs that are timeless and elegant, like a fine piece of jewelry.”
6. DICHROIC GLASS BY 3FORM
“I have really been drawn to the beauty of dichroic and iridescent materials lately and the way the color changes with light and different viewpoints. This sample inspired the cover of my book, Evoke.”
7. PINNACLE BIANCO DOLOMITI DOLOMITE DIMENSIONAL TILE BY ARTISTIC TILE
“I love the edginess that this tile brings to the table. This would be perfect for a fireplace surround, to add a modern look that feels sleek yet bold.”
8. GREAT BASIN FABRIC IN IVORY BY DONGHIA
“Using this Donghia fabric for curtains is a great way to dress up windows and add softness to a space. It is a thicker material, so it is also great for blocking out light in a living room or bedroom.”
9. DEKTON SURFACE IN LUCID BY COSENTINO
“Lucid is such a sophisticated-looking stone that can be used in many applications. I love using this as a countertop and backsplash in a kitchen.”
10. BAMBOO SILK RUG IN 1086 BY HENZEL STUDIO
“There is a certain beauty that a silk rug brings to a space. This one by Henzel Studio adds some comfort and a lovely sheen to a floor.”
11. FLUTE LILAC MARBLE DIMENSIONAL TILE BY ARTISTIC TILE
“I have always been a fan of fluting, and this fluted tile with a touch of veining is so chic. It’s a beautiful material to add to a kitchen island to create an eye-catching focal point.”
12. HAIR-ON-HIDE RUG IN CHROME BY KYLE BUNTING
“We have used Kyle Bunting rugs in many projects, and the range of colors and options for customization is amazing.”
13. XTONE SINTERED STONE IN INVISIBLE WHITE BY PORCELANOSA
“This Porcelanosa stone is so striking, and I really love the way the veining dances across the stone like art—[perfect for] wrapping around a bathroom vanity.”
14. DEKTON STONIKA BERGEN BY COSENTINO
“Another Dekton stone that I love incorporating into my designs. Its neutral color and lovely organic veining can be paired with so many different styles.”
