Showroom Spotlight
Travelers, take note: A new zen escape just opened across the pond. British-Nigerian artist and designer Mimi Shodeinde of Miminat Designs unveiled her first showroom and gallery space in London’s St. John’s Wood district. “The initial concept was creating a space that embodies my journey in design,” she tells Business of Home. “I want people to feel a sense of peace when they walk into the studio, [so I] chose very light finishes and did not do anything too heavy with the wall finishing or the floor finishes. We kept everything very airy and fresh.”
The designer, who has run her own studio for the last eight years, had always envisioned one day opening a showroom that would let her furniture collections truly shine. “It’s very difficult to show off certain pieces over social media or a website. I wanted a space where people can actually see and feel and touch my furniture,” she says. “We’ve done so well as a business in terms of growth on the furniture side, [even] without having a physical showroom, [that investing in one] was a no-brainer for me. We got to a point last year where we were doing a lot of commissions for private homes all around the world. What would happen if we had a space? That would drive sales even more and allow people to enter our world.”

The “museum-like jewel box,” as she calls it, stretches two floors, with a muted color palette inspired by the calm and spirituality Shodeinde had felt when visiting historic mosques in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, as well as Al-Masayel, Kuwait. Upon entry, guests are greeted by the mixed-material Howard table, one of her earlier pieces, and the fluid-looking Omi table and mirror and Borris chair. The main floor then reveals the gallery space, which showcases a selection of sculptural furniture from past and current collections, lighting pieces, and a handpicked collection of artwork. The second floor houses a tactile materials library that boasts metals, stone, timbers, glass and more—samples that can help inspire custom designs.
The location felt right at home for Shodeinde, a self-described North London girl, who appreciates that the area is quiet and rich in cultural history. “It represents and reflects my personality. I like peace; I don’t like chaos, so that was one of the main reasons why I wanted to be here,” she says. “And secondly, I love music, and we have the famous Abbey Road Studios down the road. I felt very connected with musical history in the area. It just felt right. They always say, ‘When you know, you know,’ and when I came in here, I just knew.” 56 Abbey Gardens, St John’s Wood, London
