Showroom Spotlight
While many brands are rushing online, Hunter Douglas is still betting on the in-person experience. A couple months ago, the custom window treatments company unveiled a 1,950-square-foot showroom in New York’s Decoration & Design Building with partner dealer Skyline Window Coverings. “A lot of retailers may have a very strong internet presence and go to the e-commerce model,” says Andy Hubner, senior vice president of sales at Hunter Douglas North America. “We feel very strongly that there are a lot of things that go into selecting the right product for the right window for the right fit and function. Showrooms are a great opportunity to showcase our products and provide an experience.”

Guests are hit with the brand’s assortment of blinds, shades, shutters and drapery upon entering the showroom, where the interior’s neutral colors allow the designs to stand out and speak for themselves. “We’ve tried to keep things spaced out so that you can stand back and have an experience with the product, and see it from the distance that you would normally look at a windowcovering, instead of very close,” says Hubner. When guests are ready to take a closer look at a fabric, they can do so with larger-format swatches that are also available.
Many of the brand’s designs are installed throughout the light-filled space to demonstrate their variability and functionality; some are on automated systems. “It’s not only a showroom,” says Hubner. “It’s an experience where you can see how it works, and see how it will interact in your life and the way you would operate the windowcoverings.”
One of the new products on display is the Aura Illuminated shade, which features built-in lighting effects. Especially well-suited for environments where the sun sets early, the shade’s built-in LEDs can create ambient light to illuminate a room, even if there’s no sunlight outside. “We’re simulating [natural light] through a feature within the shade—you can experience that in one of our conference rooms, where we can show you how to create warmth in the room even when it’s dark and cloudy outside,” Hubner explains. This kind of effect is nearly impossible to fully grasp by only looking on the website.

For Hunter Douglas, the D&D Building was the ideal location to service the brand’s dual customer base of retail consumers and the trade. “We want to have very well-thought-out showrooms so that the consumer has the ability to come in and understand the differences in the innovation that has occurred in the windowcovering environment,” says Hubner. “Part of our DNA is to innovate products and innovate solutions for the window, and this [is] one of our many stores throughout the country that reflects that innovation.” 979 Third Ave., Suite 138, New York
