Studio Becky Carter is seeking an experienced Senior Designer to lead a small design team through complex, full-scope residential and hospitality projects from initial concept through final installation. This is a role for a true design leader; someone equally comfortable developing original architectural and interior concepts, managing the many moving parts of a project, and moving seamlessly between creative exploration and technical execution.
The ideal candidate is a thoughtful collaborator who enjoys developing ideas, contributing original design solutions, and partnering closely with the Principal to elevate the work. They are exceptionally organized, proactive, and resourceful, with the ability to establish structure, prioritize competing demands, and maintain momentum across multiple projects without sacrificing quality or attention to detail. They understand that exceptional design depends as much on communication, planning, and sound judgment as it does on creativity, and they take pride in creating clear, organized processes that allow projects to progress with confidence rather than urgency.
As the day-to-day project lead, you will build trusted relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, fabricators, and vendors while overseeing both the creative and operational aspects of each project. You will mentor junior team members, coordinate project deliverables, and help shape interiors that are architecturally grounded, thoughtfully detailed, and distinctly original.
Applicants whose experience has primarily been in supporting or production roles are unlikely to be a fit. Candidates must have previously held a Senior Designer position with demonstrated experience independently leading complex design projects.
Position Structure: This role begins as a contract position during a 90-day trial period and is compensated hourly. Following a successful trial period and mutual fit, the position transitions to a full-time salaried role.
-- Technical Qualifications --
Minimum 8 years of professional experience in high-end interior design, including at least 4 years as a Senior Designer or equivalent project lead.
Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite, and Google Workspace.
Experience independently leading ground-up construction, gut renovations, and full furnishing projects.
Experience producing and editing comprehensive Design Development and Construction Documentation drawing sets.
Strong architectural thinking with expertise in space planning, detailing, millwork, custom furniture, lighting, finishes, and material selection.
Experience coordinating architects, consultants, contractors, fabricators, and vendors throughout design and construction.
Experience reviewing shop drawings, RFIs, submittals, and construction documentation.
Thorough understanding of construction methods, fabrication, detailing, and construction administration.
Experience managing luxury residential and/or hospitality projects.
Portfolio demonstrating exceptional conceptual thinking, architectural sensitivity, and thoughtful detailing.
-- Leadership & Professional Qualities --
Proven ability to independently lead complex projects from concept through installation.
Experience leading client relationships and multidisciplinary project teams.
Experience mentoring designers, reviewing technical work, and maintaining accountability for project outcomes.
Excellent communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Highly organized, proactive, resourceful, and self-directed.
Collaborative design approach with the confidence to contribute original ideas.
Experience within a boutique, full-service interior design studio is strongly preferred.
Must be based in the New York City area and legally authorized to work in the United States.
Studio Becky Carter creates modernist, retro-futuristic, warm, colorful, unexpected, and architecturally interesting designs. Designers we admire include: Giancarlo Valle, Pierre Yovanovich, Reath Design, Jessica Helgerson, and Studio Shamshiri, to name a few.
Our studio culture is equal parts highly productive and healthy, focused and chatty. We’re professional, but not uptight. Independent, but always down to help one another. We deliver high output, but make it look and feel easy, and we usually leave the office by 6:15pm with our task list complete. We’re fully integrated into the NY design culture, maintaining relationships with industry peers, paying close attention to emerging artists and designers. Throughout the year, we attend fairs, industry dinners, antique markets, and gallery openings. Basically, we love what we do and we have fun doing it together.
