Freelance Interior Designer — Part-Time, NYC
Company: Milieu Studio
Duration: Part-time
Date Posted: 08/19/26
Category: Interior Design
Location: Jersey City
Salary: 50-100k
Job Description

Milieu Studio is a Jersey City–based residential design practice, focused on concept-driven, architectural, and highly personal interiors across NYC and Jersey City.

I’m looking for my first design hire: a talented, ambitious, highly organized freelance designer with 4+ years of experience who can move fluidly between creative and technical work. You’ll work closely with the Principal Designer to develop and execute Milieu Studio’s creative direction across projects. This is a part-time contract role with the opportunity to grow into a full-time position and become a key part of the studio.

This role is ideal for someone precise, resourceful, flexible, and eager to take ownership. You have a strong point of view and an eye for contemporary design, art, craft and originality, while designing just as confidently for more mainstream tastes. You’re equally comfortable sourcing, developing a drawing set, coordinating with vendors, or jumping in on a site visit, and can work independently while staying closely aligned with the studio.

Responsibilities:
- You’ll support projects across multiple phases of the design process, including:
- Juggling multiple projects and priorities
- Sourcing materials, fixtures, finishes, furniture, lighting, art, and accessories
- Creating and developing client presentations
- Site measuring, field verification, and documenting existing conditions
- Space planning and furniture layouts
- Drafting, modeling, and documenting design concepts and details
- Project management and coordination with vendors, trades, and contractors
- Developing and maintaining FF&E schedules and specifications
- Procurement, including quotes, orders, tracking, lead times, and vendor coordination
- Assisting with installations and photo shoots
- Communicating with clients as needed
- Supporting other client-facing and project-related tasks

Job Requirements

Qualifications:
- 4+ years of high-end residential interior design experience
- Strong design eye and understanding of residential interiors, materials, furniture, and detailing
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with the NYC-area design trade, showrooms, vendors, and workrooms
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
- Interior design, architecture, or related degree preferred

Software - Proficiency or strong working knowledge of:
- AutoCAD
- SketchUp
- Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
- Canva
- Google Workspace
- Programa, Studio Designer, or similar project-management software
- Site-measuring and scanning tools such as Twindo, magicplan, or similar LiDAR-based software
- Experience with every platform is not required; the ability to learn new tools quickly is more important.

Location + Schedule:
This is a part-time freelance/contract role. Hours are anticipated to start around 10-20 hours/week and are expected to fluctuate based on project workload.
Work can primarily be done remotely, but candidates must be local to the NYC area and available during working hours for occasional:
- Site visits and vendor/showroom visits throughout NYC and Jersey City
- Meetings or work sessions at the Milieu Studio office in Jersey City - AndCo North
- Installations, site measuring, and photo shoots

Compensation:
$45–$60/hour, depending on experience and skill level.
This role is initially part-time and freelance, with the potential to grow into a full-time position for the right candidate as the studio continues to grow.

To Apply:
Please send your resume, portfolio, and a brief introduction. In your note, please include your availability, current location, and hourly rate. Selected candidates will be contacted for an interview.
