Throughout this month and January, five major auction houses are gearing up for important furniture sales. Here’s a look at what’s coming up from Wright, Doyle, Christie’s, Hutter and Bonhams.
Wright’s December Design Auction—December 12 at Noon
Notable designs of the 20th century including commissioned forms and limited editions will be featured including a collection of sculptures by Leo Amino, furniture forms by Modernist architect Gene Summers, and works by Harry Bertoia, Carlo Mollino and Pierre Chareau. Select lots will be on view in the New York gallery located in the historic Parke-Bernet building at 980 Madison.
Hutter’s Holiday Sale—December 14 at 11:00 a.m.
Decorative tabletop items, jewelry and vintage accessories are the features of the Holiday Sale, which will include an antique English silver teapot, a Japanese-motif sterling silver martini shaker, four sterling silver mounted glass pitchers and six silver plated trays. The items can be previewed before the sale (January 12 – 14) at 444 West 55th Street in New York City.
Bonhams’ 20th Century Decorative Arts—December 16 at 1:00 p.m.
This auction will feature modern and contemporary furniture to accessories from the 20th century. Highlights include a Tiffany Studios and Favrile Glass patinated bronze banded dogwood table lamp, a Sam Maloof rocking chair, and a George Walton glazed oak Holland cabinet. Items can be viewed prior to the auction (December 13 – 16).
Christie’s Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design—December 19 at 10:00 a.m.
Also highlighting 20th century design, Christie’s sale will feature chairs, tables, benches, lighting and decorative pieces. Highlights include a Rembrandt Bugatti sculpture, an Armand Albert Rateau desk and a Frank Llyod Wright lamp.
Doyle’s Yale R. Burge Collection—January 15 at 10:00 a.m.
This sale will offer over 500 lots of exceptional furniture, decorations, lighting, accessories, photographs and art Yale R. Burge’s former showroom on Manhattan’s East 62nd Street. Highlights include a Portuguese rosewood work table, a Louis Vuitton brass bound monogrammed leather stteamer tunk and a pair of Regency style gilt and painted-bronze three-light candelabra.
Open for 60 years, Burge was frequented by top designers including Mario Buatta who said, “I’ve been shopping at Yale Burge since I first started my business and have never been disappointed.”
Pieces will be on view to the public before the sale (January 11 – 14) at Doyle New York, 175 East 87th Street.
Doyle’s Important English and Continental Furniture and Decorations—January 29 10:00 a.m.
Important English and Continental Furniture and Decorations, including Old Master Paintings and Drawings, will be auctioned later in January. Encompassing the 17th through early 19th centuries, this sale will present a broad selection of elegant English and Continental furniture, decorations, porcelain, Georgian silver, sculpture, clocks, chandeliers, sconces, tapestries and rugs.
