A New York tradition with a twist, this year's Spring Symposium and Luncheon was a lighthearted event that honored design icons and longtime couple Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler with the first-ever City of Design Awards. With a program at the New York Academy of Medicine and lunch at the Museum of the City of New York on June 3, the city-centric awards "recognize those who have made New York the design capital of the world and who inspire future generations of designers to bring their talents to this great city."

Doonan and Adler

Honoring Creative Ambassador-at-Large at Barneys Doonan and designer Adler, the event kicked off with a Champagne reception before the pair were presented with framed photographs of Manhattan scenes captured by New York City artist Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao, including “Looking North from Frank Gehry Building” and “New Year’s Eve Fireworks.” Both Doonan and Adler presented on their influences, their work, and their relationship with New York. “My career is mostly because of New York City. I just feel like New York City has this fairy dust sprinkled on those of us who come here and makes it seem that anything is possible,” said Adler. “There’s no way I could ever have done what I do anywhere else in the world.”

With Honorary Chair Elizabeth Farran Tozer and the Ronay Menschel Director at the Museum Susan Henshaw Jones at the helm, the event was co-chaired by Lisa Abel, Deborah Boillot, Michael Bruno, Nancy Buckman, Helene Comfort, Nathalie Comfort, James Druckman, Mark Ferguson, Laura Lofaro Freeman, Leslie Godridge, Lorna Goodman, Elizabeth Graziolo, Jim Hanley, Sylvia Hemingway, Stephanie Hessler, Jane Hoffman, Sharon Jacob, Kamie Lightburn, Elizabeth R. Miller, Tracey Pontarelli, Kathy Prounis, Dee Dee Scarborough, Gil Schafer, Oscar Shamamian, Ann Spence, Katie Tozer, Lara Trafelet and Monica Voldstad.
