November auctions illuminate craftsmanship and art
By Staff

Art and craftsmanship are two of the main themes in this month’s series of auctions. Find work from assorted luminaries, among them French artist Sonia Delaunay-Terk and renowned designer Marcel Breuer, whose work appears alongside pieces from George Nakashima, Andy Warhol, Frank Lloyd Wright and Roy Lichtenstein.

The Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction tomorrow night will deliver a selection of treasures from recent art history, with a collection of contemporary art spanning the past six decades. Discover abstract expressionist, pop art, minimalist and postmodern pieces, as well as paintings and sculptures.

The two-session Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Day Auction on November 12 spotlights works from the postwar period to the present with pieces from Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Jean Dubuffet, Ed Ruscha and Gerhard Richter in the morning, then contemporary painting, photography and sculpture from Yoshitomo Nara, Robert Longo, Rudolf Stingel and Anselm Kiefer in the afternoon.

Design Masterworks at Wright offers 20-plus lots with pieces from the 20th century’s most significant artists, designers and architects. Among the pieces: A Conoid room divider by George Nakashima, a Frank Lloyd Wright urn, and a Nocturne radio with original glass from Walter Dorwin Teague. The auction is being previewed at Wright New York and will take place at Wright Chicago on November 19.

Modern and contemporary furniture, art and decor by designers, makers and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries will be spotlighted in the Doyle+Design auction on November 17. The gems include a classic bronze table by Diego Giacometti, Wendell Castle’s walnut bookstand and Francoise Gilot’s canvas “Paula.”

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will host 20th Century Decorative Arts on November 13, with pieces including a selection of glass vases, elegant French cabinetry, bronze busts and figures, and other decorative objects.
