WantedDesign brings designers to Brooklyn with new outpost

WantedDesign NYC, the renowned year-round design platform, is introducing an exciting second location at this year's NYCxDESIGN. WantedDesign Brooklyn in the Sunset Park neighborhood will host installations, discussions, student workshops, pop-up stores and more.

With a jam-packed program from May 9 to 19, WantedDesign Brooklyn boasts participants including Dusen Dusen, Areaware X Pratt, Austin Outside the Box, Brooklyn Delta, Industry City Community, LightArt, Shapeways, UNDER PRESSURE, USM, and many, many more. Some of the program highlights include:

May 9, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.: The Parsons Festival Program shines the spotlight on Parsons students with thesis exhibits, installations, workshops, gallery openings and other events. Learn more here.

May 9, 2 p.m. The “On the Waterfront, Sunset Park Factory Tour,” presented with Pratt Center, will depart from Urban Green Furniture (140 58th St., Brooklyn, and wind its way through three fascinating factories in Sunset Park before concluding at WantedDesign. May 9, 5 p.m.: The Sunset Park Waterfront Walkshop: “Principles of Access, Resiliency, and Ecology,” will feature Michael Porto, director of outreach and planning at the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance, discussing the changing landscape of Brooklyn’s waterfront with a focus on Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG).

May 9, 4 to 4:30 p.m.: Come along as Barry Harwood, curator of decorative arts at the Brooklyn Museum, dives into the past with the expert-paneled discussion “Brooklyn Making History: Late 19th and Early 20th Century.”

May 10, 2 to 4 p.m.: Get a glimpse of local shop Urban Glass’s experts creating glass jewelry designs using a torch at today’s Flameworking-Beadmaking demo.

Dusen Dusen and Play YET! at WantedDesign Brooklyn

May 14 to 17, varied times: The Design Schools Workshops at the Industry City location treat international design school students to an array of innovative educational programming. This year’s topic? “The Lives of Objects.” Learn more here.

May 16, 3 to 4 p.m.: Master the basics of 3-D printing with "Shapeways 3-D Printing Series" with Lauren Slowik.

May 19, 10 a.m.: Learn LEGO Creative Director Jeremy Brazeal's take on the ups and downs of a creative mind.

May 19, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: The "Design Forum," featuring an intro by Joel Towers, explores the trials and tribulations of design student education both in the U.S. and abroad, with speakers including Jeremy Brazeal; Josh Owen, professor and chair of Industrial Design at RIT; Joel Towers, executive dean, Parsons The New School for Design; and Sebastian Ocampo, professor, Centro Mexico Industrial Design Dept.
