Saturday Night Live spoofs Kohler

A recent episode of Saturday Night Live poked fun at Kohler with a toilet commercial parody. The spot, starring actor Benedict Cumberbatch, “advertises” a fake product called the Koohl Toilet. Cumberbatch enters a Matrix-style meeting where a televised leader is describing traditional toilets: “It has been designed to make you look stupid and feel foolish. It is against regulation to look cool or feel confident while on the toilet. This is the way it has always been and must always be.”

Cumberbatch smashes open a box, revealing a glossy black toilet from “the future,” and sits on it backwards. “A reverse bowl toilet that you sit on the cool way, backwards with your arms casually draped over the top,” says the voice-over. Kohler, which confirmed that it wasn’t aware of the spoof prior to it airing on the November 5 episode, responded in kind via social media with an image of President and CEO David Kohler sitting backwards on a black toilet.

“The Saturday Night Live Kohler toilet commercial was purely organic and a pleasant surprise,” says Elizabeth Brady, Kohler’s senior vice president of brand management. “We were flattered, enjoyed the satire and have received a lot of positive comments. Kohler has always strived to be innovative and design-forward and provide high-quality products, so it was exciting to see a show like SNL spoof on some of the great work we’ve done to promote toilet innovation. As a brand, we are actively engaged in social media, and the team definitely had some fun crafting our response and extending the reach of this exposure.”
