openhousenewyork announces OHNY openstudios Red Hook - the fourth in a series designed to open architecture and design studios to the public and to highlight different neighborhoods in New York City that are burgeoning hubs for entrepreneurs in creative industries. It will take place this Saturday, July 28.

The first in the series took place in DUMBO, followed by Hudson Square, and most recently, the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Founded in 2001, openhousenewyork (OHNY) is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring, engaging and educating the public about New York City's architecture, design and cultural heritage. “Among Red Hook’s cobbled streets, Civil War-era warehouses and harbor views, there is a thriving creative community in the studios, factories, and showrooms that dot this waterfront neighborhood,” says Ellen P. Ryan, OHNY interim executive director. “True to OHNY’s mission, we are excited to the open doors to these workplaces that are humming with activity and introduce the public to the vanguard of the Red Hook creative sector.”

Organized in collaboration with The Architect’s Newspaper, the event is a self-guided tour offering the opportunity to visit over 20 studios of architects, display builders, upholsterers, metal workers, industrial designers, furniture designers, glassblowers, and winemakers – see list information, below - many of which are open to the public by appointment only.

The tour includes stops at: Bigprototype – a design and fabrication lab that plans neighborhoods, designs custom homes, creates furniture and develops industrial design products such as body boards

Constructive Display – a creative display studio that uses fabrication techniques ranging from traditional wood-working methods to computerized routers to create custom retail displays, props, and scenery for photo shoots

Pickett Furniture – a custom wood furniture and cabinetry workshop that focuses on hand-made construction techniques, producing furniture that maintains a connection with nature

Pier Glass / Scanlan Glass – a glassblowing studio that produces hand blown glass fused into custom architectural commissions, art-glass, and objects, such as vases, for the home

Red Hook Winery – a winery that focuses on handcrafted, low-production wines that use only grapes grown in New York vineyards

She-Weld Studio – a metal working studio where the art and craft of blacksmithing and custom metal design creates sculpture, home and garden designs, and jewelry

Participating studios include Atelier de France, fine artists Kerry Quade and Yeon Ji Yoo from the BeeHive in 7C, Bigprototype, Brooklyn Waterfront Art Coalition, Constructive Display, Lunacy Design, MADE Architecture, Manos de Mexicanos, PELLE, perch!design, Persico & Dublin, Pickett Furniture, Pier Glass / Scanlan Glass, Piet Houtenbos /Singular Products, Red Hook Winery, She-Weld Studio, Uhuru Design, and Waterfront Museum.

A reception for ticket-holders follows starting at 5pm at the Red Hook Winery, overlooking the Statue of Liberty, located at Pier 41/175 Van Dyke Street. Built in 1873, the property consists of two brick warehouses, which in the early 20th century, was home to one of Red Hook’s largest employers, the Morgan Soda Company, later known as White Rock Beverage.

Tickets are $30 and $20 for students/seniors and can be purchased online. Tickets will also be sold on-site the day of the event for $35, $25 students/seniors. Proceeds from this event and year-round programs help to support OHNY Weekend, the organization’s signature annual event.

On August 22, OHNY Goes Up the East River on the Zephyr with journalists Sharon Seitz and Stuart Miller, coauthors of The Other Islands of NewYork City: A History and Guide, who will discuss the 42 islands within the city, some famous and others infamous, such as Rikers, the forgotten such as North Brother, and some making headlines like Roosevelt. The boat departs at 6:30 from the South Street Seaport's Pier 16. Tickets are $36.

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of OHNY, and special events that celebrate New York City’s special places, buildings, and people will take place throughout the anniversary year. The 10th Annual OHNY Weekend will take place in five boroughs October 6-7.
