The MoMA Design Store, located across the street from The Museum of Modern Art in midtown Manhattan, will reopen this fall with a design it calls “innovative, beautiful and practical.” Headed by U.K.-based designer Lumsden Design and executive architect Gensler, the project will implement a comprehensive transformation, with an eye toward an open, light-filled design. The shop carries museum-curator-approved home goods, gifts and other products.
“Highlighting good design has always been a fundamental part of MoMA’s DNA,” says the museum’s retail general manager, Thomas Randon. “Because every object sold in the store has been approved by museum curators, the renovated MoMA Design Store will be integral to our mission of making good design accessible to everyone.”
New features will include custom design elements; merchandising display systems that spotlight product from the tabletop, kitchen, lighting, tech and personal accessories collection; and a custom jewelry counter created of glass and bead-blasted steel.
“The MoMA Design Store renovation has been a great project. Our single focus was to design a shopping experience that best showcases the unique design pieces offered in the store,” said Callum Lumsden, director of Lumsden Design. “Our job has been to enhance the presentation of the merchandise and every decision during the design process has been significant, because the end result elevates the entire shopping experience within the store.”
