Kravet is debuting the fifth in a series of collaborations with the Museum of New Mexico. The fabric collection draws inspiration from the museum’s ceramic, textile and basket collections, namely small-scale patterns and embroideries from a 25,000-piece textile and dress collection that are housed at the Museum of International Folk Art. Native American textile and ceramic pieces hailing from the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture also played a role in shaping the collection.
The Kravet collection includes color and texture inspiration from cut paper patterns, textiles, pottery and basketry, evoking the sky, the earth and other colors related to the Santa Fe landscape.
When the late Alexander Girard, textile designer and museum donor, was asked why he collected folk art by the world’s artisans, he replied with an Italian proverb: Tutto il mondo è paese (The whole world is hometown).
“In partnering with us and by choosing such a broad spectrum of museum textiles for inspiration, Kravet, too, is saying: ‘The whole world is hometown’ and that there are no foreigners,” said Pamela Kelly, vice president of licensing and brand management for the Museum of New Mexico.
