“From graphics and branding to products and showrooms, from commercial to residential to hospitality design, this group designs the full spectrum and most importantly positively impacts lives all over the world,” said Interior Design Editor in Chief Cindy Allen of the 28th annual Hall of Fame Awards nominees.

Allen, together with a nomination body of previous Hall of Fame members, selected the following inductees: Alexandra Champalimaud of CHAMPALIMAUD, Patrick Jouin of Jouin ID, Jouin Manku, Jim Olson and Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects, and Michael Vanderbyl of Vanderbyl Design.

The Hall of Fame was established to recognize the individuals who have made a significant contribution to the growth and prominence of the design industry. Here's more about the winners:

Alexandra Champalimaud has added her signature design to over 60 hotels in 9 countries (USA, Germany, England, China, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Africa, and South America), designing hotels like the Carlyle, Algonquin, Pierre in New York, and the Dorchester and Berkeley Hotel in London. She has a line of fabrics for Holland and Sherry, carpets for The Rug Company, and furniture and lighting for leading manufacturers.

Patrick Jouin is one of the major protagonists of contemporary design on the French and international scene. In 1998, he founded his own Parisian agency, which has distinguished itself by the diversity of its work: construction design, architecture, industrial design, handicraft, scenography, and street furniture. His style is elegant, poetic, and combines tradition and modernity. His agency creates objects and furniture for Ligne Roset, Cassina, Fermob, Kartell, and Alessi. Patrick along with Alain Ducasse directed the design of several restaurants around the world, including the Plaza Athenee, the Spoon Byblos, and The Mix. Jouin’s creations are part of the collections of MoMA, the Mudam, and the Pompidou Centre. It’s estimated that on a typical day of walking around Paris, one encounters a Patrick Jouin design every 350 meters.  He has contributed over 46,000 designs to the urban landscape.

Olson Kundig Architects’ vast portfolio includes museums, commercial design, academic buildings, exhibit design, interior design, places of worship, and residences, often for art collectors. Olson Kundig Architects began with architect Jim Olson, whose work in the late 1960s explored the relationship between dwellings and the landscape they inhabit. Olson started the firm based on the idea that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture and people, and that inspiring surroundings have a positive effect on people’s lives. In 1996, Tom Kundig joined Olson as an owner, taking the firm to another level of creative exploration and helping it grow into an office with an international reputation.

Michael Vanderbyl is a multidisciplinary designer: graphic design, furniture, products, showrooms and retail spaces. He was among the designers who in the early 1980s established the San Francisco Bay Area as a center of the postmodern movement in graphic design. He established his practice, Vanderbyl Design, in San Francisco in 1973. Clients have included Esprit, Baker Furniture, The Walt Disney Company, IBM, AmericanOne, Robert Talbott, Teknion, The Blackstone Group, and Luna Textiles. He has designed products for McGuire Furniture, HBF, Boyd Lighting, Bernhardt Furniture, and Bolier & Company. His work is in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Library of Congress. He has taught graphic design at California College of the Arts (CCA) for more than 30 years and currently serves as the college’s Dean of Design.

The awards gala will take place at Manhattan's Waldorf-Astoria on November 28. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and the Alpha Workshops, a non-profit organization that trains and employs those living with HIV/AIDS in the decorative arts through a donor-designated grant by DIFFA, Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. Tickets for the event are $660 and can be purchased through Regina Freedman at 646-805-0270 or rfreedman@interiordesign.net.
