Design gallery and retailer of modern and contemporary Brazilian furniture, arts and objects, Espasso, has opened the first major New York exhibition by noted furniture designer Zanini de Zanine.
The show, which runs through Saturday, October 12, also features works by Zanine’s late father Jose Zanine Caldas, a seminal name in Brazilian 20th Century design, marking the first time furniture by both designers will be exhibited together.
“Zanini De Zanine’s approach to design continues his father José Zanine Caldas’ legacy of creating masterfully designed pieces with ingenuity and originality, while also allowing him to become a recognized craftsman in his own right,” said Espasso owner and curator Carlos Junqueira.
Coinciding with the exhibit opening will be the release of two new pieces designed by Zanine, the Espasso Armchair and Escoras candle holder, and three works—Anil, Tera and Tiss—will be shown for the first time outside of Brazil.
Zanine’s works often feature reclaimed Brazilian woods or metals, acrylic and plastic, which have been transformed by industrial methods into unique pieces.
Zanine created his first piece while training with design master Sergio Rodrigues and over the years his furniture has gone on to be exhibited at major shows in Milan, London, Brussels and Los Angeles. The Museu Oscar Niemeyer and Mercado Moderno in Brazil have recently featured a 10-year retrospective of his work.
Italian furniture company Cappellini recently selected Zanini to design a chair after scouting talent from five continents. He has also organized exhibits focusing on modern design for Berlin’s Zeitlos Gallery and Lisbon’s Museum of Fashion and Design.
