The Shade Store’s latest showroom is opening in Fairfax, Virginia (2920 District Avenue, Suite 175), where local designer Pierre Jean-Baptiste of Pierre Jean-Baptiste Interiors shares with EAL readers a glimpse into the local landscape.

The Fairfax/Mosaic District scene is “very urban and slightly contemporary,” says the designer. “Taking a stroll down the street feels like you have been transported into an urban oasis. The residents are young, vibrant and professional.” His firm is now working on a couple of projects in local townhomes. “This area is very accepting of new ideas and modern-transitional style of interior design and architecture, and the architecture is very sleek in its design.”

What are the top design stores in your area?
The Shade Store is a great resource for window treatments,” says the designer. “They carry an assortment of shades, including Roman and Solar Shades. Another area favorite store is GreatGatherings. They have a great assortment of furniture and accessories for your deck, den and patio.” He also recommends home design store Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

Where do you find inspiration? Parks, museums, public spaces?
Head to the park, recommends Jean-Baptiste. “Strawberry Park is a nice place to sit outside and relax when the weather permits.” He also visits museums, where, he points out, “The displays and information, coupled with the dynamic architecture, really inspires me.” Other inspiration hails from out of town: “I find inspiration primarily when I travel. Las Vegas’ amazing interior design; The Atlantis resort in the Bahamas; Costa Rica resorts; Old San Juan, Puerto Rico; South Africa; and the list goes on,” he says. “Nature is always a great source of inspiration, as well due to the variety of colors, natural materials and landscape.”

Where do you take clients for lunch or coffee?
Matchbox is a favorite place to grab lunch,” recommends the designer. “The cuisine is very diverse, offering seafood, pizza, meat and pasta. Try the mini trio appetizer when you get a chance to stop by!”
