Online furnishings retailer ATGStores.com and the New York School of Interior Design are collaborating on the Green Roof Initiative, the transformation of the school’s rooftop into a sustainable garden. The initiative, which was proposed by the school’s U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) student group, is now in the process of fundraising, and is expected to be complete in spring 2017.

Alexa Hampton, NYSID trustee and ATGStores.com creative director, involved ATG in the Green Roof project, inviting the company’s president, Michelle Newbery, to join a consulting panel. “When I heard about the NYSID project, I knew ATGStores.com would want to get involved,” Hampton explains. “As a home furnishings retailer with a wide selection of eco-friendly outdoor designs, it seemed like a perfect fit.”

The collaboration will extend beyond Newbery’s involvement on the expert panel. “After getting to know the NYSID students and faculty, we knew we wanted to forge a partnership that would take us beyond the Green Roof Initiative,” says Newbery. To that end, the retailer will furnish the outdoor garden upon completion. It is also offering discounts to NYSID faculty, alumni and students.

“It was thrilling when NYSID students first proposed transforming our 70th Street roof into a garden for our community. It’s a great demonstration of the power of design to transform lives,” says NYSID president David Sprouls. “I am delighted to welcome ATGStores.com as a sponsor of this important project and our partner in preparing our students to be leaders in interior design.”
