Summer brings 14 furniture, art and antiques auctions

Throughout the month of June, five major auction houses (and a furniture retailer) are gearing up for sales across the country and abroad. Here’s a look at what’s coming up from Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Doyle, Rago, Wright and Ethan Allen.

19th Century Furniture and Decorative Art (June 6, New York)

For the 19th Century Furniture and Decorative Art sale, Sotheby’s will present pieces by some of the best cabinetmakers and firms of the time period. Highlights include an extensive collection of E.F. Caldwell articles, property from a private Midwest collection and four-life size carved mahogany allegorical figures. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 6.

Important English and European Decorative Arts (June 9, New York)

Sotheby’s Important English and European Decorative Arts sale features furniture and decorations ranging from the Baroque to the late Neoclassical periods as well as ceramic works of art from across Europe along with Oriental and European rugs and carpets. Highlights include a fine Louis XV ormolu-mounted gilt and black japanned commode, a rare Louis XV ormolu-mounted ebonized cartonnier clock and an impressive Russian Imperial carved kalgan jasper tazza. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9.

The Opulent Eye (June 9, New York)

The Opulent Eye sale is an eclectic mix of furnishings, sculpture and ceramics highlighting the 19th Century aesthetic. The sale is led by The Cornwall Collection: Masterworks of the 19th Century, an exceptional group of decorative arts by the century’s foremost cabinetmakers such as François Linke, Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener and the Beurdeley family of ébénistes. Other top lots include an Italian ‘jeweled’ marble figure of Cleopatra by Fernando Vichi, whimsical furnishings by the haut luxe firm of Escalier de Cristal and a selection of champlevé enamel works by Ferdinand Barbedienne. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 9.

Interiors: Style & Spirit (June 10, London)

Christie’s Interiors: Style & Spirit features furniture, silver, antique lighting, rugs and porcelain jars. Highlights include a pair of Chinese Cloisonee vases, a pair of Edwardian walnut hall stools and a Lobmeyr enameled glass part service. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10.

Important 20th Century Design (June 11, New York)

Sotheby's Important 20th Century Design sale features masterworks of decorative art and design spanning the last hundred years. The auction opens with a collection of American art glass by Tiffany Studios and Steuben Glass Works from the Estate of Dr. Edward and Helen McConnell. Also up for auction, a highly curated selection of Tiffany leaded glass lamps, including an illustrious “Wisteria” Table Lamp. The sale begins at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11.

Doyle + Design Sale (June 11, New York)

The popular Doyle + Design Sale showcases Modern and Contemporary furniture, decorations and art by the most prominent designers, makers and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Highlights include a bronze and glass trapezoidal low table, model cerfs et aux chiens, by Diego Giacometti, a 1984 Formica and glass Fish lamp by Frank Gehry and a group of furniture by Garouste & Bonetti and Olivier Gagnere acquired at Galerie Neotu in Paris, including a 1995 Schlelsinger cabinet of wenge, gold leaf, lacquered wood, bronze and steel by Garouste & Bonetti.

Important 20th Century Decorative Arts & Design (June 12, New York)

Christie's Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design sale features Tiffany Studios lamps, dining tables and chairs, artwork and other accessory pieces. Highlights include a Carlo Di Carli dining table, a Jean Royere sconce and a Jacques Adnet cabinet. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 12 and Part II begins at 2:00 p.m.

Early 20th Century Decorative Arts (June 14, New Jersey)

Rago's Early 20th Century Decorative Arts sale features work from the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, including lighting by Tiffany, Handel and Pairpoint, as well as furniture by Gustav Stickley and the Roycrofters. The sale begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14.

Rago Modern (June 15, New Jersey)

Each Modern sale by Rago includes furnishings, ceramics, glass and other decorative art, lighting and fine art. Furniture from craftsmen such as Wharton Esherick, ceramics and glass by Gertrude and Otto Natzler and Dale Chihuly, metalwork by Albert Paley will be up for auction. The sale begins at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 15.

Design (June 12, Chicago)

This June’s Design auction by Wright focuses on rare forms, works produced in small editions and items of historical importance. This sale, with more than 200 lots, features works by the most influential and innovative designers of the 20th century. Highlights include a Nuage bookcase by Charlotte Perriand, Carlo Mollino’s avant-garde coffee table for Singer & Sons as well as significant works by Peter Voulkos, Harry Bertoia and Ruth Duckworth. The sale begins at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 12.

20th Century Carpets (June 13, Chicago)

Wright will present the 20th Century Carpets sale featuring carpets by modern weavers such as Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Barbro Nilsson, Marianne Richter and Ivan de Silva Bruhns. Highlights include Modern and Moroccan carpets—from finely woven curvilinear designs of Persia to colorful, coarsely woven Turkish carpets and luxurious silk and metallic carpets of China. The sale begins at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13.

An American Dynasty: The Clark Family Treasures (June 18, New York)

As one of the nation’s wealthiest men at the turn of the 20th century, William Andrews Clark’s name is synonymous with American aspiration. Both a senator and a magnate of a successful personal empire enveloping multiple industries, Clark’s prosperity and wide-ranging curiosity drove him to pursue a lifelong passion for art and culture that he shared with his wife and daughters. An American Dynasty: The Clark Family Treasures sale features over 400 items, including fine art, musical instruments, Gilded Age furnishings, decorative arts and rare books collected by two generations of the Clark family, opening a new chapter in the story of one of the cornerstone dynasties of Industrial Age America. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18.

Interiors (June 24, New York)

On Tuesday, June 24, and Wednesday, June 25, Christie’s hosts its monthly Interiors sale featuring carpets, furniture, sculptures, mirrors and accessories, beginning at 10:00 a.m. each day.

Ethan Allen’s Modern Masters Collection (Now live, Online)

An exclusive exhibition of rare and collectible lithographs created by some of the most legendary artists of the 20th century are for sale as part of Ethan Allen’s Modern Masters Collection. Artwork by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dalí, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger and Joan Miró is up for grabs. Some of the 81 pieces are signed by the artist, and each comes with a certificate of provenance that is dated and numbered, then hand-signed and stamped. The sale is now live at ethanallen.com. Shoppers can also purchase the art at any Ethan Allen Design Center where the collection will be available to view on touchscreens.
