The design industry is always looking for the next "big thing"—whether it’s a person, project or idea—and it’s often discovered through the art of competition. Companies and organizations are offering up enticing prizes from cash to travel vouchers for great talent and new, innovative ideas, as well as editorial opportunities for some fresh faces. Below is a roundup of contests and calls for entries with approaching deadlines from Metropolis magazine, LAMP, Daylight Spaces, NKBA and HGTV.
The inaugural Shape the Future design competition, put together by Metropolis magazine and DuPont, is asking designers to push boundaries to make the impossible practical. The contest asks designers to focus their visionary thinking on a familiar and time-tested material: Corian. Participants must transform the familiar 20th century material into 21st century, tech-age environments, surfaces, spaces, structures, art, furniture and objects. One winner will be awarded $7,000 and there will also be two $1,500 runners-up prizes. Winning submissions will be publicized in Metropolis magazine and across all of its digital and social media channels. The deadline to enter has been extended to Friday, August 8.
The Lighting Architecture Movement Project (LAMP) is hosting its international lighting design competition open to all ages and creative backgrounds. The top 25 designs will be shown in their concept sketch form at the event and will be open to a public vote. In addition, 10 jury-curated lights will be chosen from the content and exhibited. The top audience design and top panel choice will receive a critique and review of their winning design from Fontana Arte’s creative director. The deadline to enter is Friday, August 15.
The 2014 Daylight Spaces International Architectural and Design competition aims to highlight the importance of natural light in architecture. The focus of the competition includes planning, discovery, observation, analysis or evaluation of an efficient way to improve the “day lighting” of buildings. Winners of the Daylight Spaces contest will be awarded with all-expenses paid travel to Krems, Austria, for production and a 1,000 € grant. The deadline to enter is Thursday, August 21.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association has launched the inaugural NKBA U Professional of the Year, a cross-industry contest that will recognize the most driven design professional in the industry. The contest has three rounds and runs from July to January. Entrants can apply online now, sharing how they excel in one of the eight NKBA U learning paths and how these skills come to life day-to-day on the job. The final competition will be held live at KBIS 2015 in Las Vegas, where the winner will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Spain. The deadline to enter is Tuesday, August 26.
HGTV.com is now accepting submissions for its 2014 Fresh Faces of Design Awards, which recognizes up-and-coming designers who have shown excellence in thoughtful and creative home design. Professionals can submit their projects for consideration online. A panel of HGTV.com editorial staff, on-air hosts and industry professionals will select six nominees for each of the 10 categories from all submissions. HGTV viewers will choose the category winners by voting for their favorite projects and the panel will then select the top honor of overall winner from among the category winners. The category winners will be featured across the HGTV family of websites, mobile apps and in HGTV Magazine. The overall winner will also receive a guest editor spot on HGTV.com and a visit to the HGTV offices to meet with HGTV’s editorial teams. The deadline to enter is Sunday, August 31. Winners will be announced in January 2015.
