The design industry is always looking for the next "big thing"—whether it’s a person, project or idea—and it’s often discovered through the art of competition. Companies and organizations are offering up enticing prizes for great talent and new, innovative ideas, as well as trophies and recognition for some big name awards. Below is a roundup of contests and calls for entries with approaching deadlines from SBID, RIBA, Franz, FIGMENT and AIANY, Crystorama, Hansgrohe and Axor, and Duravit.

2013 SBID International Design Award winning project

The 2014 SBID International Design Awards will recognize, reward and celebrate design excellence from high-end luxury projects to innovative design and new talent on limited budgets. Categories include the best in residential interior design, retail design, hotel design, contract and residential product, public space and visualization. The deadline to enter is Monday, July 14.

This year, RIBA is inviting 310 schools of architecture in 62 countries to nominate up to two design projects for the President’s Bronze Medal, up to two design projects for the President’s Silver Medal, and one dissertation for the President’s Dissertation Medal from student work produced during the 2013/14 academic year. The deadline for submitting dissertations is Monday, July 14, and Monday, September 15, for design projects.

2013 Franz Award entry

The Franz Award is an international porcelain design contest, which aims to provide a platform for young designers around the world to meet and gather creativity and inspiration. The contest will help young designers explore the possibilities and potentialities of porcelain works and identify life-changing designs. The first place winner will take home more than $16,000. The deadline to enter is Wednesday, July 16.

FIGMENT has teamed up with the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY) Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) to host a competition to design and construct an architectural pavilion on Governors Island for the City of Dreams Pavilion, now in its fifth year. The City of Dreams 2015 Pavilion Design Competition asks entrants to consider how they will construct this temporary structure in the most efficient and sustainable way possible. The deadline to register is Friday, August 15, and the deadline to submit is Tuesday, September 30. The jury of leading architects and other industry professionals will review initial submissions and then select finalists. These finalists will receive comments and will have the opportunity to revise their proposals. The jury will meet again and select the competition winner in November 2014.

2014 DESIGNER STYLE entry

For the DESIGNER STYLE contest, entrants must email a photo of a Crystorama installation from a client’s project. Crystorama will add each photo to a DESIGNER STYLE Facebook photo album and the photo receiving the most “likes” will receive a first-place prize of $500 and will be featured in a Crystorama print advertisement later in the year. The second-place winner will receive $300 and third place will receive $100. The sales representative who covers the territory where the first place winner is located will receive $200. All photos must be emailed by Sunday, August 31. Winners will be announced on September 2, 2014.

The inaugural Hansgrohe+Axor Das Design completion is open to all U.S. projects that feature Hansgrohe or Axor products and were completed in the past three years. Winners will receive a trip to Germany to attend the IHS show. The deadline to enter is Tuesday, September 2.

RIBA is also welcoming nominations for the Annie Spink Award, presented in recognition of an outstanding contribution to architectural education. Winners of the award receive the Annie Spink trophy and £10,000. The deadline for nominations is Thursday, September 11.

2013 Duravit Designer Dream Bath Comeptition entry

Duravit’s Designer Dream Bath Competition invites architects and designers to imagine their ideal bath space using a selection of new Duravit collections, which this year include Vero, DuraStyle, and Happy D.2. Participants use their own bathrooms as a basis for their designs and submit a rendering or sketch illustrating the potential transformation with the implementation of Duravit product. The winner will be awarded the Duravit items used in his or her project up to a value of $15,000. The deadline to enter is Monday, September 15, and the winner will be announced during Duravit Design Week (October 6-8) at Duravit’s New York City showroom.
