Auction houses heat up: Nine upcoming sales to note

Throughout the next couple of weeks, five major auction houses are gearing up for important furniture and antiques sales. Here’s a look at what’s coming up from Bonhams, DoyleChristie’s, Wright and Rago—as well as bed maker Charles P. Rogers, which is auctioning off items for charity.

Bonhams' Fine Art & Antiques (February 11), The Winter Antique & Picture Sale (February 13) and Period Design (February 25)

The Fine Art & Antiques sale will begin on Tuesday, February 11, with antique and modern silver, as well as pictures up for bidding starting at 11:00 a.m. Furniture, clocks and works of art will be up for auction starting Wednesday, February 12, at 11:00 a.m. Highlights of the sale include a George I Walnut Featherbanded and Crossbanded Chest of Drawers, A Late 18th Century Dutch Mahogony Bombe Armoire and a Set of Four Old Sheffield Plate Rectangular Entrée Dishes.

The Winter Antique & Picture Sale, beginning on Thursday, February 13, at 11:00 a.m. features furniture, large works of art, clocks and carpets. Highlights include a Victorian Invalid’s Chair, a George I and Later Brass Clock, a 19th Century Carved Giltwood and Parcel-Gilt Drawing Room Suite and various paintings dating back to the early 1900s.

The Period Design sale features furniture, carpets, lighting and accessories dating back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It includes an Edwardian Satinwood Kneehole Dressing Table, an Austrian Ivory Mounted Walnut and Oak Bureau-Cabinet and a Tabriz Carpet. The sale goes live at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25.

Doyle New York's Doyle At Home (Feb. 11) and Belle Epoque Auction (Feb 19)

The popular Doyle At Home Auction is back this year, beginning Tuesday, February 11, at 10:00 a.m. The auction features fine furniture, decorations and paintings from prominent estates and collections including prints, porcelain silver and rugs. Highlights include a pair of Biedermeier Part Ebonized Fruitwood Tub Chairs, an Architectural Model Dome with Internal Staircase, a pair of Empire Style Silver Plated Three-Light Candelabra and a pair of George III Style Painted and Decorated Small Bookcase Cabinets. The items will be on display from February 7 – 10 at Doyle New York (175 E 87th Street).

The Belle Epoque Auction on Wednesday, February 19, at 10:00 a.m. showcases 19th and 20th century fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence of the Belle Epoque. Elegant furniture and decorations of the Louis XV and XVI revivals, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras will be offered, as well as art glass, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories, mirrors, clocks, sconces, chandeliers, rugs and fin de siecle paintings. Featured in the sale is a selection of Tiffany Studios lamps, candlesticks and bronze desk accessories.

Christies' Interiors (Feb. 19)

The Interiors sale features works by American artists and designers who have made use of the country’s vast landscape as a subject matter. The fine art pieces kick off the sale on Wednesday, February 19, at 10:00 a.m. At 2:00 p.m. Silver and Objects of Virtue, Glass and Ceramics follow. Then on Thursday, February 20, American furniture, decorative works of art and rugs conclude the sale.

Wright's Art + Design (Feb. 27)

Wright adds Art + Design to its auction calendar starting on Thursday, February 27, at 12:00 p.m. The sale will feature a curated and well-vetted selection of modern and contemporary artworks and design. Highlights of the artist designed furniture in the sale include a desk and a large set of chairs by Donald Judd as well as a set of Pharmacy chairs by Jasper Morrison and Damien Hirst. Select works by Günther Förg and Mariol's Portrait of de Kooning will be on view at the New York gallery beginning February 22.

Rago Auctions' 20th Century Design (March 2)

Rago Auctions is selling a rare collection of Nakashima furnishings in exotic hardwoods as part of its 20th Century Design auction starting on Sunday, March 2, at 12:00 p.m. This two-owner collection features a rosewood desk, East Indian laurel and hickory Conoid chairs, an East Indian laurel dining table and a rosewood office suite comprised of a file cabinet, double pedestal desk, wall case and a wastebasket. Other highlights include works from the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, lighting by Tiffany, Handel and Pairpoint; furniture by Gustav Stickley and the Roycrofters; and ceramics by George Ohr, Grueby and Rookwood.

Charles P. Rogers' Red Bed Campaign (through Feb. 10)

Charles P. Rogers has partnered with The Heart Truth to join the fight against heart disease. February is American Heart Month and the Charles P. Rogers Red Bed Campaign (#redbed) is underway. Through February 10, supporters can bid online on one of two custom-made red Leighton beds. The winners will be announced on Valentine’s Day and 100% of the proceeds raised will go to benefit women's heart health education and research.
