The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) announces the winners of the 2nd annual Educator Design Excellence Awards, a peer-juried national design competition that recognizes interior design excellence in both residential and commercial design projects completed by ASID Educator Members.
This year’s educator competition winners for commercial design is Born Again Zen by Diane Alexander and Rex Spencer, Art Institute of Houston. A 5,000-SF medical office with a sustainable focus, the Born Again Zen design and brand concept uses color, lighting and textured materials to engage the human senses and create a luxurious and calming experience for patients.
Honorable Mention: Classic Herman Miller Exhibit by Eric Wiedegreen, Florida State University. This exhibit pays homage to the era in which Herman Miller pieces were first introduced. The freshness and simplicity of the exhibit bring the Herman Miller brand to life, making it as relevant in 2011 as it was in the 1950s.
Residential Design winner is Meet Knox by Diane Alexander, Art Institute of Houston. Meet Knox provides a multisensory, therapy-centered play environment that meets the physical and educational requirements of a specials-needs child. Design elements include an accessible herb garden to assist in the development of the sense of smell, a music center created to enhance auditory skills, a three-dimensional textural mural to develop the sense of touch and a ballet bar to develop self-awareness and motor skills.
The other winner is Mountain Villa by Tamie Glass, Allied ASID, University of Texas. Mountain Villa is a transformative renovation of a 1980s Taniguchi design that captures and restores a stunning architectural classic.
Honorable Mention was Donnelly Residence by Ronni Whitman, Art Institute of California - Orange County. This universally designed residence honors the character of a mid-century home while making it an accessible, sustainable and timeless example of aging-in-place design.
