The prestigious Red Dot awards for product design were bigger this year in more ways than one: A record number of product entries (5,200 total), plus a larger-than-ever jury of 41, yielded a Red Dot distinction for a total 1,304 products. The top honor, Best of the Best, however, was granted to just 79 entries, while 107 products received honorable mentions.

As the organization explains, “Honorable mention goes to projects with a well-executed aspect of design work. Entries with high design quality receive the Red Dot, while the rare individual distinction Red Dot: Best of the Best is assigned by the jury to outstanding products in a category that win the jury members over with groundbreaking design.”
Products spanned 31 categories, including Living Rooms and Bedrooms; Kitchens (including furnishings and appliances); Bathrooms and Spas; and Lighting and Lamps. Some of the the Best of the Best winners include the Barrisol–Lovegrove Manta lamp; I Bordi Bathtub, by Teuco and Carlo Colombo; and Ruutu glass vases, by manufacturer Iittala and design by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec.
Danish fashion designer David Andersen, who debuted as a Red Dot juror in 2015, shares, “It is inspiring to see designs from all over the world and to follow the development. It is a pleasure to be a juror in a group of such competent designers, who are looking at so many fantastic products and discussing each one individually.”
