More than 30 new design store openings to note

A slew of new stores and showrooms have opened across the country and abroad in recent months—both in design centers and on the street. From interior design shops to furniture showrooms, this list highlights by region many new resources available to designers looking for a fresh perspective.

New York City

Roche Bobois' newest New York City location

After opening its flagship American showroom in New York on Madison Avenue more than 40 years ago, Roche Bobois is back with a second location at 207 E. 57th Street. The space was designed by Jacqueline Hopfer and includes everything from a TIN lamp to sofas upholstered in Missoni Home fabric.

Interior designer James Huniford opened the James Huniford Design Studio in Chelsea between 24th and 25th street last month. The shop houses his own Huniford Collection furniture, which he originally began creating as one-offs for his clients. With the new shop, Huniford debuted a new collection, which includes a tufted slope-armed sofa, occasional tables, chairs, lighting and more.

New York based-event planner Jung Lee opened up a 3,600 sf store across from the Ace Hotel on 29th street titled “Jung Lee.” The store houses everything she has once used to create decadent weddings and parties. However, with a more residential feel and offers flowers, tabletop objects and furniture.

Since its inception in 2010, ddc DESIGNPOST has been home to a rotating lineup of top European designers, focusing on the brand identity of each through allocated showroom space. This year, DESIGNPOST welcomes Italian leather specialist, Baxter, and Swiss design icon, Vitra, to join Zanotta, Missoni Home and Paola Lenti on the basement level of their flagship 34th Street space. The basement level is completely new and has a darker, more industrial look, providing a stark contrast to the bright and clean geometry of the upper levels.

First Sofa.com retail location on Fifth Avenue

The British furniture retailer Sofa.com opened a 4,000 sf retail showroom on Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron district. The goal for the showroom was to create a warm and inviting space that reflects people’s homes. During the time that shoppers are making their sofa selections, they will be offered drinks from the coffee bar, have their children entertained at the “kids corner” and they can help themselves to the extensive collection of free sample swatches from an art-like wall display.

Doris Leslie Blau teamed up with ABC Carpet & Home to open a new shop on Broadway. The shop houses items from both of the brands and marks the first time that Doris Leslie Blau products will be offered directly to the consumer.

French luxury bed and bath company Yves Delorme opened a 730 sf shop in the Bloomingdale’s 59th street store. The shop features bedding, bath accessories and decorative pillows. Four more shops are also set to open later this year in other Bloomingdale’s locations across the country.

The new Sleep Studio space in Soho

Next month, Sleep Studio will open its flagship store in Soho at 73 Wooster Street. The concept store is dedicated to creating the “sensuous bedroom” and will feature a unique assortment of beds, bedding, loungewear and accessories.

FENDI Casa will open its third US showroom at Madison Aveune and 32nd Street in Manhattan in August. The 10,000 sf space will showcase FENDI Casa product as well as other luxury living brands including Kenzo Maison, Luxury Living Interiors and Bentley Home.

Baccarat today unveiled its newest flagship store at 635 Madison Avenue at 60th Street in New York City ahead of its upcoming 250th anniversary. The 2,800-sf store is designed by Rafael de Cárdenas serves as a new global retail model for the brand. Individual spaces showcase product categories including jewelry, home décor and lighting.

West Hollywood, California

With decades of success operating one of Boston’s leading interior design firms, business partners Michael Carter and Douglas Truesdale have brought their efforts to California with the launch of their new shop Carter Truesdale. Located in the heart of the La Cienega Design Quarter, the pair will operate their design practice from the showroom, which will house Carter Truesdale’s own bespoke furniture collection, and serve as the nationwide representative for Tillett Textiles.

“While our style is associated with a classical architectural approach and refined sensibility, we feel that there is great opportunity to infuse the casual spirit of Southern California into our work and create truly beautiful and distinctive homes for our west coast clientele,” said Truesdale, who will lead the studio’s design practice in the new space.

Los Angeles, California

Resource Furniture opened its latest location in Los Angeles just a few days ago. The showroom specializes in mulit-functional space saving Murphy beds and tables, and also offers exquisite lines of imported European Furniture.

Rancho Santa Fe, California

Kris Lajeskie Design Group's new Rancho Santa Fe showroom

The Kris Lajeskie Design Group is set to open a new retail design shop any day now. Last week, Lajeskie herself gave a private sneak peek of the space to clients, and she's ready to unveil the offerings to the public. The store will house collections of furniture, rugs, fabrics, accessories and more.

Palm Beach, Florida

Roche Bobois has opened its third Florida showroom with a 6,000 sf space in Northern Palm Beach. This location brings the Roche Bobois showroom total to 240 in over 40 countries.

Dallas, Texas

High-end custom wallcovering company Gracie announced the opening of its newest location in the Dallas Design Center last month.

Also in the Dallas Design Center, Dorian Bahr has opened the Dorian Bahr Gallery in the all-new Cory Pope Showroom. After selling their own showroom business in 2010, Dorian Bahr is trying out a new business model, selling within the Cory Pope Showroom and other multi-line showrooms across the country.

Chicago, Illinois

Stylex Chicago showroom

Just in time for NeoCon, Stylex has unveiled its completely redesigned showroom in the Merchandise Mart. The showroom was created by Perkins + Will Chicago to showcase Stylex products and the new Share activity-based seating system in thematic environments within a modern office setting. The three areas, which include a focused workspace, a collaborative space for meeting and discussion, and a social space where teams interact, are complemented by a dynamic wall graphic that gives the showroom a sense of greater space and places. Share in the context of a standard, desk-based work setting.

The Merchandise Mart also welcomes nine new permanent showrooms to floors three, 10 and 11. The showrooms include Arper, Suite 339; Prismatique, Suite 10-138; Integra, Suite 10-140; Brentano, Suite 1040A; BuzziSpace, Suite 10-111; Grand Rapids Chair, Suite 394; Skyline Design, Suite 1060; D.L. Couch Wallcoverings, Suite 11-113; and Kinetex by J&J Flooring Group, Suite 10-116. The showrooms cross over several product categories including seating, desking, wallcoverings, floorcoverings and textiles.

Europe

Ethan Allen continues to expand globally with the opening of its latest retail location abroad in Antwerp, Belgium. Located in the heart of Antwerp’s fashion district, Ethan Allen’s newest international location showcases a boutique-style layout complete with the company’s newest furniture and accessories plus the latest user-friendly technology. In addition, clients can use room-planning software on large touch screens to see layout options and preview their purchases.

Hamptons, New York
